I bought a laptop last September. It has worked fine since (pictures, sound, games, computing etc).

I tried playing a movie DVD on it a few weeks ago and although the picture is fine there is no sound. I've tried numerous DVDs etc but can't work it out.

Does anyone have any clues to what it might be.

Are you missing some Audio Codecs?

What program are you using to play the DVDs - do they play ok in Windows Media Player?

MR, open explorer, navigate to the folder / drive where the dvd is. Right click and choose "play with" and select any other media player other than the one you have had no success with. see if it will play in another media player installed.

I also have a problem with my PC!! I can not see many of the films that I've downloaded, I can hear the sound but no pictures! What do I need to download to cure the problem??

Many Thanks!

Will - yours is almost certainly codecs.

What format are the downloads? I am guessing DIVX

Try googling 'DIVX codecs' or alternatively 'Video Codecs pack'

Will,

Get yourself an application called GSpot. If you open up the files you have downloaded within this, it will tell you which codecs you need to get in order to play them successfully. You can google these and install them.

A word of warning though - there are many 'bumper' packs of codecs around, some of which are very buggy and are in no way tested. Installing these packs can be a really bad idea, so its best to install each codec separately.

If you must install a codecs pack, make sure to set a system restore point before doing so.
