As this forum has people that seem to know a lot about everything, could anyone help with the following:

I have decided to try and sell a house on the internet independently from an estate agent, and have created a html page with all the details and various photos. Does anyone know where I can read up on how to launch the page onto the www and any advice onto the best websites to use.

Any advice you have would be very much appreciated.

Thanks
Kathy

You need FTP software (File Transfer Protocol). I use a program called Crystal FTP pro which I bought as a download after trialling it. It is quite easy to use for someone who is a regular windows user. On Crystal you just 'drag and drop' files and it then uploads them to your webspace. You need to know the specific address to upload to along with your username and password for that webspace. It's not mega simple but with a bit of help you'll get there.

I have purchased the name for the site already Mark, and I am off to go and look at your suggested program. So many people seem to sell their houses via the web, I am hoping I have not taken on too much but I resent paying 1%-1.5% commission to an Agent if it is something I can try and do myself.

Thanks for the advice. :)

Hi Kathy
usually your service provider will issue you with some free web space, more than sufficient for what you need.
You should be able to do a redirect from your domain name to your free web space so this will save you buying web space.
FTP is easy enough to do, all it is is transfering files from your PC to your webspace, if you use your service providers free space they will issue you with a user name and password for this.
As Brian points out though, the only people who will see your webpage are the ones you give the address to. Alternatively you could pay for a high position on a search engine but that will defeat the object of you saving money.

Thanks Trig. I have always hoped to work out how to start a website, so this is a learning curve as much as anything.

Brian, the theory is I will advertise the url of the web page as well as use the free websites where you are able to advertise your properties.

Only just got round to doing this after a few hectic days. I have managed (with some help) to transfer the file on the WWW but minus the photos for some reason using Leech ftp. I am sure I will get there in the end.

I think you have to upload the photos seperately and individually as independant files.

I also think I said the same thing there three times.

:D Thanks Phil. I managed to design ( basically, a few words and some photos) the web page on a word document, and changed it to an html file, and then tried to e-mail it to someone for them to look at it. The e-mail went through but without the photos. I think that's where the problem starts. I will check when I get home, as I am in the office at the moment.

On the face of it, and when I can get the photos uploaded, it seems a lot easier then I first thought. Famous last words eh?
