Surely a singer with one of the sexiest voices of all time ? Retired in her 40s due to shyness !!

I agree about the voice, but disagree about the retirement. She as appearing on television when in her fifties, including seven years as the "fiftyish but still as sexy as hell" sister in Emergency, the ER of its day.
She did go a bit strange and agoraphobic after her divorce from Jack Webb (when she was 27) but recovered about a year later when she met Bobby Troup, whom she later married.
It's worth watching "The Girl Can't Help It" if ever you get the chance just to see her singing "Cry Me A River".

Didn't she retire from singing in her forties though ?

Strange programme. It was as if there wasn't much to say about her . That seems to be because , her second marriage was very happy and contented. They got nowhere near the bottom of the reason she gave up singing in 1968 and became a medical soap star . The suggestion seemed to be she had wrecked her voice by smoking too much - that little clip from the Dinah Shore show was odd .
