Liam Lawlor Rip

It was a bit sad for the family that the papers made such a big deal of the Ukranian woman who was in the car with him. All the media, including reputable journalists, worked off the assumption that she was a prostitute. It now appears she is a legal secretary and interpreter who speaks Russian, English and Czech (Mr Lawlors previous pitstop was Prague). She had previously worked for Lawlor who had "extensive business interests in eastern Europe".

It would appear the media were working off the priciple that dead men can't sue, and were happy to publish/broadcast without checking their facts.

I dont think that anyone who writes for the sunday independent or the sunday world could be classed as an reputable journalist. For all that he did wrong, and for all the FF shysters that are going to heap the blame on him for planning corruption now that he is dead, those papers deserve some serious sanction for their disagraceful behaviour. I'm sure his family have been through heaps in the last five years.

The fact is, it wasn't just the Sunday Independent and the Sunday World. It was everyone, even the Observer, with most papers going off the back of quotes in the early editions of those papers on a Sunday which produce copies early on Saturday evening,

Certainly it was a monumental fuck up and I do feel sorry for the family, even if their luxurious home and lifestyle has been bankrolled by god knows how many dodgy dealings.

Yet it does display the flaws, to some extent, in the gathering of news information as a whole. Everyone was working off a source from within the Russian police, and it's quite clear that the information was terribly terribly wrong. On Saturday, people had to trust that source, and the cost of being cautious was to risk looking stupid against the competititors who you had to believe had better sources than you did. As it happened, they didn't, but everyone bluffed themselves into running with it.

Even still, I would be curious to hear the interpretor's side of the story and get the full story on why Lawlor was in Moscow in the first place and needed to fly her from Prague to be with him on that journey.

I can just imagine the editors' reactions to the unconfirmed reports, and their moral dilemma about running the story. I accept that there were other papers that went with it as well, but I think there were plenty willing to accept the story unquestionably because of the man involved.

I can't help but feel that if the media has been made learn a lesson, at least it wasn't at the expense of anyone deserving of any particularly generous sympathy.

I agree with Gareths point but I do certainly agree that respect must be shown to the family . Did anyone see The Panel last night ? I thought they handled it well . Just enough irreverance but tempered . It would be hypocritical to just say jeez wasn't he a great fella
The Indy had their cake and ate it too with the main headline suggesting the now disproven vice girl angle and another article on the same page saying essentially what a nice fella he was

I think that was a loose interpretation of balance on their part sol!!

I agree with Garney's point that consciences were eased because of the character involved

I think he came off quite well considering the mauling they gave to Rory Caroll  Point taken though .
They did'nt say too much really and isn't it more telling that the Teeshirt himself called him "a larger than life character" Every dog that barks knows that's a euphemism for someone who is operating outside the law or flouts convention generally . In Mr Lawlor's case the public knew how they were intented to interpret such a backhanded compliment.

Supposedly the Indo knew that the story was wrong when the presses were printing but didn't have the moral courage to halt production.

No matter how sleazy some of the tabloids are, none are as odious a publcation than the Fanning family's weekly edition. I wouldnt allow its shreds to line a kennel.

The one good thing on the panel was Neil Delamare's rant on social diarists. I dont think he is a particulary good comedian but it was about time someone let loose on TV speaking their mind on the subject.

The recruitment practices carried out by Fanning and co are dubious to say the least,

Making the right first impression can help,

Let's just say, he's got a keen eye for talent......

A. Fanning is the most obnoxious and unlikeable man I have ever encountered. The thought of that slimeball passing judgement on even Liam Lawlor is odious.

Obviously one of the great editors. The last time I saw the Sindo Dion Fanning was reporting from Old Trafford and some other Fanning was the chief rugby correspondent. We would laugh at this kind of nepotism in a banana republic.

A Fanning recently recruited a young female with no writing experience by spotting her outside a cafe before approaching her and telling her that he would 'make her a star'

She has featured on the front cover since then, and even wrote an article or two. Astounding.

The Sindo nepotism is laughable, it even ranks above RTE on the nepotism scale and that, I thought, would take some beating. There's a few more Fannings there too, I believe

Some of the recruitment practices in the daily Indo are dubious, to say the very least.

generally lads and lasses who get paid to tell us what parties and who they have met in the previous week. Synonym for wanker.
