Don't suppose anyone has had any experience with liver infections do they? My now eldest cat Dusty (15) is at the vets tonight after spending the day throwing up, the vet at first thought he was in renal failiure but a blood screen this evening has ruled that out but showed up a serious liver infection, they have put him on a drip with Anti b's & a steroid jab but it is very much touch & go as they don't know if its being caused by an underlying condition

An Capall - NO!

Blimey, Aldaniti, is anyone left fit and well at your place? :o No idea, I'm afraid, but surely your vet knows what they're doing and will advise you, won't s/he?

No experience at all, it's a very odd place to have an infection. The good news is that the liver is very good at repairing itself if damaged. The AB's and steroids will be quick to kick in so hopefully in the next day or so you'll see an improvement :)

Tell me about it  suppose thats what you get when you have lots of pets :(

He was fine last night, the vet thought at first he was in renal faliure but that test was neg, I've never had a pet with a liver problem before so its all new to me, been flicking about on google tonight & have come across so many things that can cause the infection its unreal :o

So far everything else is fit & healthy here :P

My little old cat, who's nearly 15, was discovered to have lesions in her liver a few years ago after a number of tummy upsets.

Over the last 18 months she's been on Overid (now I give her one tablet every 9 days), which seems to have greatly reduced the sick attacks. A couple of months ago, after a further bout of sickness, they did another blood test and one of the liver readings was off the scale, so the vet couldn't tell me what the reading actually was. Her sugar levels are normal.

Last weekend I thought she was going to die on me when she threw up and didn't eat for over two days and just lay on the floor, but since then she's made a miraculous recovery (about 24 hours between being flat out and being back to normal and eating well).

In between these attacks, she's fine and carries plenty of condition. I feed her good quality elderly cat dry food.

It sounds as though Dusty might have a similar condition, he may well be able to live quite comfortably with it. Try not to overfeed him.

Thanks Ven, He was also very dehydrated which did not surprise me by the amount of fluid he threw up! she said he was sleeping & comfortable when she rung with the results so the painkillers had started working, there is a vet on duty all night as it is a hospital rather than just a surgery so he has the best care available to him, going to ring first thing to get an update.

The liver is the organ that cleans us so it takes a right beating. It is often where cats and dogs get infected or have lesions towards the end of their lives.

There is a theory amongst vets that cats cannot detox as well as us, or dogs. So water pollution and food additives get them worse. I think I believe this to be true as the numbers of cats with liver problems has risen greatly lately.

Cats are meant to eat much of their food raw and all of the processed stuff we give them is not good for them. There is a vet now who advcates some rae meat mixed with things like spirulina. But you just try getting an old cat who loves his Science Diet to let go of that ! Mine were very fussy.

I lost two cats in the last few months to liver tumours. One was at home with us for a few months but the other went very suddenly.

The one thing they had in common was sudden weight loss, vomiting and loss of appetite. I made a soup like food for one of them who became dehydrated. Just boiled some chicken bones, bit of meat and carrots and peas then wizzed it all up in the mixer. (without the bones natch). He loved it and it got him going again for a few more weeks.

Aldaniti, I really hope your cat will be okay. But, you know we have to accept that they do not last as long as we do, or as long as we want them to. I miss mine terribly, and just keep telling myself I was lucky to have known them. And despite the pain when they go, I would not give up having had them. Think you feel the same.

You could also get the cat some Rescue Remedy. I gave mine that plus Crab Apple which is for cleanisng, helps to detox the liver. Just make sure you dilute it in their drinking water, 4 drops of RR and 2 of Crab Apple. Fresh water each day for a week.

Best of luck ......

Many thanks, I'm not sure that introducing raw to Dusty would be a problem as he's a scavenging little bu**er I only have to turn my back on him in the kitchen & he'd have food off the plates  I do part raw feed my dogs with whole chicken & pigs trotters, small amounts liver/kidneys, the cats often get a wing tip to eat which they shovel down, I might look into that if the outcome is a positive one :)

Not much improvement overnight, they are going to do an xray & liver scan this morning but they are doing it under GA as they have found a slight heart murmur & its safer than a sedation apparantly, ringing after 2pm

Fingers crossed for a good outcome, Helen.

Some great tips from Isinglass whch I had never heard of before. I have only owned one cat and luckily she is in good health. I know that can all change quite quickly though. I know I would certainly ask advice on this forum if any of my pets become ill.

Yes sometimes its good to get info from real people rather than just the vet!

Not really any the wiser  he has some patching on his lung which could be asthma or something alittle more sinister, it looks like he may have a gallstone which can cause blockages or it may still be liver disease  they are going to carry on with the fluids/antib's etc & monitor some liver thing that I can't remember what it was called bil..... something or other! if that rises anymore then I think they will want to remove the gallstone as its probably a blockage, if it comes down then well ........... we did not get that far, we are over the vets tonight with Harvey as he is having his first jab so we might find out somemore then otherwise we have to ring tomorrow

Aldaniti,

It is bilirubin, think I have spelt that right. It means elevated liver enzymes. This can be caused by a blockage as you describe, in a gall bladder duct. Very rare in cats, common in people. Basically the blockage causes a back up of liver enzymes normally used to digest fats, and they digest bits of the liver. Painful, and dangerous. But not as bad as liver cancer, for sure.

Good luck, sounds lie your vet is on the case anyway.

Cherry juice and cherries in general are excellent for liver infections, for birds, humans and any other mamal, how would you feed this to a cat? if you cannot purchse pure cherry juice, squeeze the juice out of natural cherries into a cup maybe, use a syringe, put in cats mouth and squirt, the cat will not like it but it will be most beneficial.

Good luck in any event. :D

Thanks Mark, Can I send him over later with a syringe & a pair of gloves

Good news I think  I have just had a phone call to say he can come home :) but it was only a receptionist who could not tell me anything else so hopefully will know more a bit later

11mths on & he is still going strong :) despite the vet saying that he probably didn't have long to live!
