Watching the racing from sunny Thurles the thought crossed my mind that I can't remember fences not being jumped through low sun in Ireland. Is that perception correct?
Very rarely happens but then there aren't that many racecourses that operate during the winter so the chances would always be good that they would get away with it. I'm surprised a few of the non-triers haven't used it as an excuse after they bolt up the next time....."sorry steward but the last day I was travelling well until the sun got in my eyes, the horse was fine but I had to pull him up coz I couldn't see how close I was getting to the leaders"
Gav's Delight fell at Leopardstown many years ago at the first fence past the stands because the sun got in his eyes (according to his subsequent press conference). The fence was rebuilt to be at a different angle for future meetings, although I think it was also vandalised, possibly by someone who took the even money.
