My pc crashed this afternoon, not sure what happened but everything froze & the only way I could turn it off was to press the reset button, anyway since then I can't get windows (xp home) to load, I can get windows safe mode up but thats it! no internet/printer/usb ports nothing :( I know it might sound silly but the most upsetting thing about it all is that all my pets photo's are saved in My Pictures, I can access them through safe mode but I can't move them anywhere, I've tried burning them onto a disk but it won't do it (keeps saying there is no disk!) tried putting a card reader in but the USB ports aren't working either  I've been told that its my harddrive & I'll lose all the photo's  any ideas?

I'm using my sons PC at the moment but have lost all my book marked sites  so could someone post me the addys of the following sites if you know them?

Thoroughbred champions forum
Racehorse Memories
Famous Racehorses

are these any good

I would be surprised if the hard drive failed as you can start in safe mode, if the hard drive was gone you wouldn't be able to do that.

You could try taking the hard drive out and putting it in your son's PC, easy to do (although you may have to move the jumpers to use it as a slave drive) then copying all the pictures from your drive to his.

Cheers! I might try that tomorrow! I've spoken to a couple of PC repair men tonight who all seemed to be full of doom & gloom, everything programme wise works on the safe mode not just my pictures but Word/Games etc its just external type stuff  I'm completely dense when it comes to PC's but to me it seems like Windows just isn't booting up when switched on & it stays in DOS

Try doing a System Restore whilst in Safe Mode, restoring your system to an earlier date before your PC crashed. This could help.

could be something simple like a power supply

I still reckon its unlikely it will be the hard drive though

Sorry I should of said I'd done that! took it back three times yesterday/last month/Middle of May, but nothing changed  the DOS screen just goes around in circles, it says to choose the following

Safe mode
safe mode with networking
safe mode with prompt
last known working config
normal start up

I've clicked them all & they all come back to the same screen after showing the windows loading screen where the blue bars move side to side  also the words are all wrong its not just spelt wrong its like a dyslexic has written it ( no offence meant but its the best way to describe it!)

Ald, is your pc networked with that of your sons? If so, try enabling safe mode with networking and then see if you can access your hard drive from your sons pc. If so, you should be able to copy the photos across to his hard drive till the problem is sorted out. I too would suspect it isn't a problem with the HDD, and if you re-install XP, it should just sort out any corrupt system files you have.

I'm not sure what being "networked" means :shy: but if it means are they somehow connected together the answer is no.

I had this problem a while ago. One of the IT guys at work fixed it for me - it wasn't the hard drive but he had to reload Windows/all programmes etc. I immediately bought an external drive to save a copy of everything. I would have been so upset if I had lost photos and personal stuff. Hope you can fix it. :)

I'm hoping that I can get the photo's saved somehow then we can have the PC fixed & wiped clean :) someone is sending me something called puppylinnux apparently it loads without windows & you can save things on it, can only give it a try!

Please don't worry.

If you can start in safe mode then it's not all doom and gloom.

There are various things to try but it's all quite techie.

Take it to someone who knows PC's very well and all will be fine.

If your around the Horsley (surrey) area then i'd look at it for you but to be honest i'm really busy at the moment.

Don't go installing more things at this stage as it might just make the whole thing worse.

Now this does get my sympathy, having had a complete crash on my PC last year, resulting in it being sent to two recovery companies, neither of whom were ble to help! Took me months of extra work to redo everythng and it's a major depressin-making event. Truly hope your data is recoverable, Helen.

I now have two back up systems - conventional memory stick and an automatic separate hard-drive back up using Retrospect Express, which saves me a lot of having to remember to do back ups!

I'm now £110 lighter :( but with a working PC :)

It had four major virus's (Won't be buying Norton again  )
Graphics card was almost cooked so had that replaced & also had McAfee installed,

It must be a relief to get it back Helen, especially as it contains all your photos. I really must download my photos onto CD's as I would be mortified if I lost all my photos which are currently contained on my laptop.

:D

No, I can put hand on heart Krizon and say we have never dressed him up, apart from his commando style winter jacket (purchased on Ebay), purely to keep him warm during his long walks in the winter!

Talking of dressing up, this dog is known by day as meek mild-mannered Bark Kent....

It's not his willy. It's his sheath, thank you, which keeps his love sword nicely warm. Expressed in terms of ratio, in human form he'd be a pretty interesting guy to get to know (well, speaking for wimmin, anyway!).

:) Do you remember that line from 'Blazing Saddles' where Cleavon Little is being sized up, as it were, by Madeleine Kahn? "Is it twoo what they say about black men ... (long pause) ... oooh, it's twoo, it's twoo, it's TWOOOO... " one of my faves.
