Manslaughter?

Hugely unfortunate, but to say it is "absolutely disgusting" implies that they did it on purpose. I don't believe that for a second. Just look at the negative publicy it is causing for starters.

Well if they knew that the woman needed an electric supply to keep her alive but still cut it off then it was on purpose!

Do you believe that they did? If so why would they do it? What is their motive?

The investigation will prove whether their was intent, negligence, a lack of communication or whether infact the it was the family at fault.

But don't let that stop you jumping to conclusions. Guilty until proven Innocent right?

Its hardly the first time this has happened, money grabbing utility companies cutting off the elderlies gas/elec etc

Are you suggesting that utility companies should continue to offer a service to people over a certain age who wont pay for it?

Oh well if they have a track record then they are definitely guilty then.

I can't speak for what happens in NZ, but over here, if you make some effort to pay your bills and let the company know what your circumstances are if you can't, they will bend over backwards to make a suitable arrangement. The ones that get cut off are the people who ignore warnings and do there own thing without making any contact. Cutting people off is not a profitable exercise.

Again speaking for Ireland. People on emergency medical equipment (or are considered vulnerable) are registered as such with the Electricity Supply Board and will not be cut off. I imagine this is the same in most countries.

When it comes to the stage of a contractor turning up at the house to cut someone off, you can only imagine the raft of excuses that they would be given as to why the disconnection should not take place - this intervention by the customer should be taken long before a technician calls out to the house.

I remember a heatwave in New York a few years back when I was there, and Con Ed took the decision to cut off the supply to the Washington Heights district which was essentially a poor largely black community so that Manhattan wasn't affected. I seem to think this caused about 10 people to die, which in fairness to the normally callous Guiliani, sent the Mayor into an absolute rage. The last I knew he was prosecuting them

It is now illegal for the water companies to disconnect you so why can it not be the same for gas/elec? they are needed just as much!
