I can't speak for what happens in NZ, but over here, if you make some effort to pay your bills and let the company know what your circumstances are if you can't, they will bend over backwards to make a suitable arrangement. The ones that get cut off are the people who ignore warnings and do there own thing without making any contact. Cutting people off is not a profitable exercise.


Again speaking for Ireland. People on emergency medical equipment (or are considered vulnerable) are registered as such with the Electricity Supply Board and will not be cut off. I imagine this is the same in most countries.


When it comes to the stage of a contractor turning up at the house to cut someone off, you can only imagine the raft of excuses that they would be given as to why the disconnection should not take place - this intervention by the customer should be taken long before a technician calls out to the house.
