Mark Crehan

I find it useful - when it happens to be in shot, of course :). Sympathise with poor old Crehan, though, he won’t ‘arf get some stick and God knows what he’ll be hit with on “social media”.

I’ve had a shocking couple of days punting. My last bet today was Aerion Power……….
Anyone know anything about dog racing??

One thing that allows seems to get missed in these discussions is that there are as many (nearly as many in this case) punters who who from the mistake as lost.

That's really a side-issue, though, surely.

You could argue the same in every controversial situation.

I recently got paid out on a 'winner' that was disqualified (B365 pay out on the double result).

It's not. The arguement is often framed that jockeys mistakes such as this are done at the punters cost and should be punished harshly as a deterrent. Reading a lot of abuse online about how his actions killed placepots and imagine the accas leading up to Aerion Power etc. There are likely to be as many punters who got the placepot last night as a result of the mistake.

Well I suppose it’s an argument, Hawk, but where would you stop? There’s many a race lost because a jockey has made a mistake positioning their horse or timing their challenge, there’s many a jumper floored because their jockey made a mistake and misjudged the fence. And so on.

In this case it wasn’t the mistake that was penalised, but that it led to him not riding out the finish, which was the offence. If you tried to introduce a rule relating to “mistake” it would surely prove a nightmare and almost impossible to police.

I wasnt really commenting on that, but it was a clear mistake (not riding out having mistaken the winning post) and at the extreme end of that spectrum.

The ones you outline above being the milder sort. The point that I was making that jockey errors doesn't mean that punters get robbed, punters were unlucky. There is a pearl clutching contingent that shout that this sort of mistake cannot be tolerated and the book must be thrown at him as a result. 6 month ban.

I think the type of punishment he got is in line with a deliberate non-trier. Where Crehan was clearly not corrupt, just made a mistake. He got 28 days, Havlin, for instance got 21 for stopping Stowell from clearly winning at Lingfield. And of course Havlin strangling Stowell benefitted most punters as the long odds favourite won the race.

It doesn’t excuse the mistake or offer any consolation to punters who were out of pocket but anybody betting on an apprentice or conditional jockey ridden horse knows they are less experienced and thus more likely to make a mistake of some kind, notwithstanding this was a pretty bad one, especially from a jock that’s had over 200 rides this season alone
