Mr Oaten asked for "space" and "personal privacy"
Former Liberal Democrat leadership challenger Mark Oaten has stood down as the party's home affairs spokesman over an alleged affair with a rent boy.
Mr Oaten released a statement apologising for the "embarrassment" caused to his family, friends and the Liberal Democrat party.

Married Mr Oaten, 41, and the MP for Winchester, dropped out of the Lib Dem leadership race this week.

The statement follows claims to be made in a Sunday newspaper.

News of the World managing editor Stuart Kuttner said Mr Oaten had been confronted with details of a relationship with a 23-year-old rent boy by reporters from the Sunday paper.

'Personal privacy'

In a statement Mr Oaten said: "I have stood down as home affairs spokesman for the party.

"I would like to apologise for errors of judgement in personal behaviour and for the embarrassment caused, firstly to my family but also to my friends, my constituents and my party.

"I will not be commenting further at this time and would now ask for some space and personal privacy for me and my family."

Lib Dem chief whip Andrew Stunell said Mr Oaten had stood down "with immediate effect" as home affairs spokesman.

He and his family now need to have their personal privacy respected

Lib Dem chief whip Andrew Stunell

"He has apologised to his family. He has apologised to his constituents who he always served well," Mr Stunell said.

"He and his family now need to have their personal privacy respected."

Mr Oaten's resignation as home affairs spokesman comes only two weeks after the party's leader, Charles Kennedy, stepped down after admitting he had received treatment for a drink problem.

Mr Kennedy's resignation prompted the leadership battle.

When standing down as the Lib Dems leadership challenger on Thursday, Mr Oaten said the other contenders all "had much more support" among MPs.

His withdrawal leaves Sir Menzies Campbell, Chris Huhne and Simon Hughes as the remaining candidates.

  Absolutely - although The Fast Show got there first with a sozzled politico - how much more engaging if Chaz Kennedy had said, 'I believe I no longer (hic!) have the sherport of my constishtuency, and can only apologizhe for being vair, vair, drunk (hic!) azza time...'

Rowley Birkin wasn't in politics, krizon, he was a barrister. Indeed, he was a QC. (I know that wouldn't have stopped him being in politics if he hadn't minded a cut in salary, but it appars that he didn't fancy it)

You're right again, Brian. (Thinks: how can I get this man stopped? Where's that Smarty-B-Gon spray?)

That Ming Campbell is a nasty two faced bit of work.
And that after he he speaks so highly of you.... [/b][/quote]

In all seriousness though, his single minded determination to get into power is tearing his party apart.

No more than happpens in every party when there is a leadership contest. Saying that a politician is hungry for power is a bit like the News Of The World spending over £100k to tell us that Sven is motivated by money.

With Charles Kennedy they were beginning to make inroads, he's scuppered all the progress they have made.

How could any MP ever go with a rent boy and hope that the story would never come out. Makes me laugh. Especially going for leader. Are they that thick?

Appalling - a rent boy? - in the good old days, one gave one's batman a good rogering, went to the Club and savoured a few whiskies, ranted about the degenerative youth of the day, went home to peck one's wife on the cheek, then settled down for the night with a stout book about manly pursuits.

Remind anyone of the 'good old days' with Jeremy Thorpe as leader - didn't he have similar tendencies?

I don't think these Liberals know their head from their ARSE...ah yes Jinny I remember it well...........or maybe they are being more LIBERAL!!! than anyone else.... don't do as we do, do as we tell you!!!

And then there were two.

Now Hughes, who is also dead meat.

Yes, he of the homophobic anti-Tatchell campaign.

Dont you just love MP speak!
Mark Oaten claims an "error of judgement".
I think it was Littlejohn who wrote than an error of judgement is going out in the morning without your umbrella when the chances of rain were given as 70/30 not paying money for a session or sessions with a rent boy(s).
How can the Liberal party ever consider having him back.
With a decision maker like that in the party they are going nowhere fast.
