MARTIN PIPE CONDITIONAL JOCKEYS’ HANDICAP HURDLE - Analysis
This year marks the second running of the extended two and a half-mile contest named in recognition of the record-breaking trainer Martin Pipe.
The Nicky Henderson-trained Andytown took the initial running and the Seven Barrows handler has 15 of the 179 entries, including the promising novices Radium, Lord Generous, Quantitativeeasing, Peveril, Ranjobaie and Kerada, the high-class mare My Petra, Gerry Feilden Hurdle winner Fairyland, the 13-year-old Caracciola, successful at Royal Ascot in June, and Erzen.
David Pipe has eight entries, headed by last season’s Pertemps Final runner-up Buena Vista, as well as Consigliere and Gaspara. Henrietta Knight has entered the high-class chaser Racing Demon, while another to have mixed it at the top is Denman’s brother Silverburn, trained by Evan Williams.
Venetia Williams has engaged Chief Yeoman, as well as Aachen, third in a Cheltenham handicap hurdle on January 30, while Karen McLintock could run useful novice Bygones Of Brid.
Among the 26 Irish entries, Willie Mullins has C’Est Ca and Thousand Stars. Larkwing and Faltering Fullback are among the Eric McNamara-trained entries, while others include the Gordon Elliott-trained Meath All Star, the Noel Meade-trained Silverhand, multiple Grade Three winning chaser Moskova, from the Paul Nolan stable, and the Martina Doran-trained Alice Bradys Call.

1. Run for the first time in 2009, the Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle is named after one the greatest trainers of modern times, who retired at the end of the 2005/06 season. In a career spanning 32 years, Martin Pipe was champion trainer on no fewer than 15 occasions. His 4,182 winners included 34 at The Festival, placing him second in the all-time list of Festival trainers.
2. Martin’s son David ran seven horses in the race last year with Big Eared Fran faring best of the septet in third.
3. Andytown won the inaugural contest for jockey Felix de Giles and trainer Nicky Henderson, who equalled Martin’s total of 34 Cheltenham Festival winners in the process.

The number of times some of his horses have been shuffled around beggars belief. The man looks a total nutter.

Not sure what race he is going for, and have barely looked at the races in detail but Hampshire Express looked to have oodles more to come after his last win and could be a big player in some of these handicaps.

Oh,and I see that the ill fated Alice Bradys Call is being quoted by some bookmakers for this and the other races he was entered in.

There does seem to be an assumption that bookmakers should actively check on every horse in every list. To the best of my knowledge there's been no major news story with regards to ABC and I'm sure if you e-mail the bookmaker concerned they'd remove him from their list.

Not so easy admittedly with this particular horse,but there was no excuse for some bookies still quoting prices for Russian Trigger in the National long after he was fatally injured in the London National at Sandown.

I backed Meath All Star a couple of weeks ago at 20/1 and in a NRNB multiple (sadly containing two NR's and Son Amix). Think he should go well and is the one they have to beat - has one of the better jockeys in the race on board also and hoping he's come on for his spin at Wincanton last week

Not one to usually have a go at jockeys, but quite annoyed with the ride Skelton gave radium there. I accept he may well have been a non-stayer, or outstayed, but he could at least have rode him into the race instead of trying to sit as still as a mouse - can't he see no horse is making up ground after the last? The way he rode him meant a mistake at the last put paid to his chances and that's what happened - I can't imagine Henderson delighted as this was one really, really well handicapped horse.
