Hey guys I'm after some help on how to work out match (heat) odds from overall odds.

E.g. Say 8 teams were in the quarter finals, their overall tournament odds are in brackets.

Is there a formula for working out match odds based on overall price or is it generally just done arbitrarily?

How would we price these matches up?

A (10/1) v B (5/4)
C (7/1) v D (9/2)
E (8/1) v F (10/1)
G (9/2) v H (8/1)

Cheers.

I don't know the answer, but logically I'd start by converting the odds into implied percentage chances and adjust for overround (ie make a 100 percent book). Then you know each team's chance of winning relative to each other.

After that, **** knows. If games had two possible results it'd be easy but the draw complicates things. Someone on here will know though.

Match odds are not derived from tournament odds. It works the other way around.

Sorry I forgot to say these are matches that only have 2 outcomes...like tennis matches.

I hear what you're saying about tournament odds being derived from match odds Slim as a good draw obviously dictates the overall price to some degree. In this instance though this is how the overall book has been priced up. How would you price the matches based on that?

If you can be arsed of course :)

A (10/1) v B (5/4)
C (7/1) v D (9/2)
E (8/1) v F (10/1)
G (9/2) v H (8/1)

this is how i would do it..i'm probably wrong though

starting with top one

A = 10/1 = 9%
B = 5/4 = 44%

add them together = 53%
divide 100 by 53 = 1.89

multiply 9% by 1.89 = 16.98%
multiply 44% by 1.89 = 83.02%

so odds may be B = 1/5...A = 5/1

Or you could create a ranking rating like horse racing..the 5/4 shot could be a 120 horse..the 10/1 shot could be 112 horse..so ask yourself how many times in 100 races does the 112 horse beat the 120 horse...the above answer might not be far off

That's the right answer to the question EC but Slim is bang on.

Team A may be 10/1 to win the tournament and team B 12/1 but team B could be more suited to the conditions of the specific match than team A (head to head record for example) and hence be a marginal favourite
