I couldn't stant the endless virus scans interrupting everything with Virgin's (free) PCGuard and downloaded (and paid for) McAfee's 2010 package. I've just disabled the bugger because I've taken 40 minutes to NOT get any e-mails, a further 20 minutes to get IE, and then it didn't want to go to links any faster than writing by quill pen.

I've sent McAfee a tart response to their 'tell us why you're disabling our product' and reinstated Windows Firewall. However, I've got to keep the McAfee Virus Scan rubbish going or risk infestation by trolls, trogs, Trojans and trash.

Can anyone tell me if they've installed McAfee and whether it's arsed about for hours before letting them use their pc? The damn processor grunts away like a hippo with constipation from the moment I switch it on - without it, now, all is peaceful and we're fair rattling away. Any thoughts/suggestions/help much appreciated!

Get rid of McAfee completely, keep your windows firewall and download the free version of AVG which I have used on two computers with absolutely no trouble or expense. Maybe wait for the other IT lads to log on but AVG does the job for me.

I'm pretty sure I've tried both Norton and McAfee at some point and found them both slowing everything up ridiculously.

Following advice from those on here more knowledgable than myself, I downloaded AVG three or four years ago and things have been fine ever since. Just remember to set the scheduled scans to a time when you don't really want to use the PC as they can slow things down a bit (but not as much as the others).

What a waste - at least it was on sale! Thanks, Gal, it just seems to grind away forrrrrevvverrrr and I've now had a look at some online reviews which imply what I've been finding - a VAST gap between Class 6 and Group 1 status users! (Myself being in Banded company!) Just not very user friendly unless you've a Ph.D in IT. Right, I'll find AVG if others agree, too. I've used Norton in the past, too, Alders, and found the same prob as I'm getting now - got the upgrade a few years back and it went into dial-up speed. Rubbish - they try to do a total bundle of every single thing you could ever want, inc. defrag, clean-up, etc. and it just seems to overload the system as I assume the whole thing cranks up at the same time you log on. I've dumped the AntiVirus and the system is smooth, no annoying silly message boxes, either. Okay, I'll switch the Windows Firewall back on now and try to find AVG.

Thanks a span, folks, appreciate it.

Well, that's the McAfee down the toidy - gone. I've done what you said, Gal, and (fingers firmly crossed) there are so far no annoying info-boxes to say it's cleaned that, scanned this, washed the car and is going for a haircut. Also, the really good thing is that the processor isn't groaning and moaning like a sick cow. A lighter load and enough effectiveness, I think. Thanks a ton - to a non-techie, the simplest yet still effective stuff is really all that's wanted.

The test was startup this a.m.: much less grumbling from the processor, just a gentle nurdle now and then. Much quicker to give me my e-mails and I've deliberately kept the machine on standby to see whether it goes into groaning spasm mode - it hasn't so far. So, thanks again, Gal. AVG and Windows Firewall seem to be very adequate to the job.

Taken the advice and dumped all the Mcafee from ever slowing laptop and already working better (with AVG installed). From previous experience AVG is excellent

Got to say I didn't have any prob getting shot of the damn thing. You've done what I did - go to Remove/Add Programs, select McAfee, and request it to leave the building. I did it before I installed the AVG, though - you really need to get shot of the stuff you don't want before trying to overinstall something else and then get shot of it. Don't forget to look at the Windows Firewall, Dessie - make sure that's either OFF if you've installed someone else's, or ON if you haven't. AVG doesn't have a Firewall, so it's important then to have the Windows one ON.

Did all that, Kri. I think the problem is that the McAfee licence had expired. I didn't want to re-subscribe (it's not my laptop, I'm just trying to help someone even more IT-illiterate than myself) just to dump it.
