Reflecting on Joe Mercer after his sad death I spent most of yesterday down memory lane some fifty years since. Surprising how much you can recall when you really get serious with it. Called up a few photos and race videos which brought back even more memories, but oh what plummy accents most of the commentators had in those days :lol:
In turn, all that triggered a memory of a day at Chester when I was talking to a guy in the stands and told him about a 2yo I’d been waiting to see run at Chester again since it had suddenly found out how to handle the course late on in its last run and finished well. He was quite taken with it and went off to the ring for a bet, whilst I slunk round to the Tote.
It won at 15/2. Great, until I bumped into the chap with his friends celebrating at the bar. He’d won quite a bit and they all thought I must have made a killing so I had to join in supplying the drinks! Cost me a bloody fortune.
