He should do well. A strong jockey with a brain.

Fogarty looking forward to the ‘pro’ challenge
A realistic Mikey Fogarty (23) said "you want to pitch yourself in with the big boys and see are you good enough" as he readies himself for his debut as a professional jockey next week.
An accomplished hurler too, Wexford man Fogarty explained: "I was going to turn last year but I went and had surgery on a disc in my back instead. Then I said I'd wait until this summer.

"The weight is okay – I'd do ten seven.

"The highlights as an amateur were the old GPT in Galway and the Amateur Derby on Admiral Barry (2010). The Land Rover Bumper on Divine Rhapsody (2010) and winning the Conyngham this year on Panther Claw.

"Riding a winner at Cheltenham for Peter Bowen (Quattrocento, October 2010) was a good day too."

Fogarty, a familiar face 'between the flags' as well for the last few years, will now obviously have to wave goodbye to that game and he acknowledged: "You'd be taking three or four steps back at the minute to try and build yourself back up.

"Riding as an amateur is great and all and I did reasonably well at it so this will be a new challenge and I'll just have to see how I get on.

"I always tried to ride in the four and five-year-old point-to-points and then go on for the bumper. I won point-to-points on Quito De La Roque, Martello Tower, and on Black Hercules this year."

Preparing for a hurling match with his club St Anne's Rathangan against Shelmaliers in the Senior Hurling County Championship quarter-final this Saturday, Fogarty is freelance and he currently rides for Liz Doyle, Colm Murphy, Colin Bowe, Paul Nolan and "who'll ever use me really."

He added: "I still ride out for Willie Mullins a couple of days as well.

"Alan Donoghue is my agent and all I'm looking forward to is giving it my best and trying to improve as much as I can."

Donoghue can be contacted on 086 – 3824702.

You can count me as a big fan. A close friend of Donal Devereux in our yard( who incidentally is riding out of his skin )I used him on Quattrocento at Cheltenham where he duly obliged ,giving the horse a brilliant ride
