Another day of sunshine in Norwich which, I fear, may be the last before we return our default; Fifty Shades Of Grey takes on a different meaning in these parts, my friend.

My notebook is entertaining a few hopefuls and it will be fascinating to see how it pans out as we dig in for the flat season. The previous one was, for me, not good, principally because of the wet June, July and August we suffered, causing multiple going changes. They used to say, didn’t they, that the most fertile months for the flat punter are June, July and August , due to the consistent going. I do hope we can hope for more of the usual consistency this summer. In fact, I more than hope, I pray: in the name of Jesus, Mary, Joseph and the wee donkey.

The garden is burgeoning but two problems confound me at present. The first is the wood pigeons pecking at the honeysuckle buds: annoying. I’ve put some netting up just to give the poor thing a chance to flower. The second issue is that my peony looks to be flourishing but not flowering. Perhaps you might offer some advice Chaumi.

Enough horticulture, already. Racing.

The usual Mundane Monday fare , isn’t it. There is one noted horse going but I very much doubt it’s out to win. Angel Of The Bay (2.17 Catterick) has been noted in dispatches but that was on the all-weather. He’s had three runs now but the stable have entered him into this novice stakes race. I’ll be looking to see how it runs on the turf. I think the breeding suggests 1m might be in order, eventually, what with the Camelot on the dam’s side. Early days as a three-year-old so 7f would seem to be the call. As with all these types of notebook horses having their first run of the season, I shall have a little insurance peck of a bet but no more. After all, I would think that handicaps will be the chosen route so they might run it down the field and use the run as a guide to how it’s suited to the turf.

Otherwise, there are three that I’ll do to he merest hint of a stake, since they’re ones that have crossed my path before and look to have a reasonable chance.

Marbuzet -2.47 Catterick

Shirocco’s Dream – Hereford 3.35

Indian Creek – Windsor 6.35

Probably a tiny Ew patent

Peonies can be tricky, particularly in light of their general longevity where you think they can handle anything. But they do get caught out.

Assuming it's established and has flowered before - perhaps the excessive wet conditions up to about 2-3 weeks ago have had a negative impact. It's possible also for very fertile conditions to work against them. Maybe if close to a lawn that's been getting fed, then that feed could be making its way to the roots.

There are probably several other potential causes.

But if it's newly planted, peonies are one of those that don't like disturbance. Maybe another year will be needed.

fwiw there were some going for a tenner in the Lidl's today next to my Mum's. Looked in good nick but none had any flower buds. I was tempted but decided against it. Suspected they would need a year in mine before getting anything. And I'm saving up for a fastigiate pine that I'm desperate to have in the collection!

Wasn’t a bad run from MARBUZET, yo. Easterby reckons he always needs a couple of runs to clear the cobwebs, so maybe next time.
