Anyone else noticed this?

Not sure of the correct description but there's a complete circle of light around the moon..

It's very beautiful and made the check around the yard very reqarding tonight!

As I drive back from Windsor on the day No Refuge won, a lovely day was capped totally by a beautiful Hunter's Moon. As I drove through the countryside (the M4 was gridlocked so I got off a couple of junctions ealry & made my way across country) the most amazing large, orange Hunter's Moon was visible low above the fields for a few minutes. It's not often that a Hunter's Moon is visble like that but it really does take the breath away.

A hunter's-moon is the full moon phase, following the harvest-moon; the harvest-moon is the full moon nearest the autumnal equinox, rising nearly at the same hour for several days. (Thank you, Chambers.) It was a beautifully clear, pale moon coming back from Plumpton yesterday afternoon, with plenty of its detail showing.

My grandmother had a print of a picture called 'Hunter's Moon', showing wartime torpedo boats out by night. I seem to recall it being a very clear moon, shining brightly on the sea. I assume it's because it's a good moon to go hunting wabbits or poaching his Lordship's deer by?

I am intrigued by this. Apparently the Harvest Moon falls in October every third year - what do we reckon happens to the Hunters Moon (October moon) when this happens and what do we call September's moon in such a year?

Incidentally, (not just being nasty, just can't resist) according to the sources I have found, the moon which SL described would actually have been a Full Beaver Moon (November Moon). :P

"Bad Moon Rising" x Creedence Clearwater Revival, oh yes!

Simmo - dunno, dearest, that woz all wot I got, though I wonder if Uncle Google will throw up some nice pictures and descrips? Fabulous moon down y'ere in Brighton tonight - you can see details of its lunarscape, and all around it is the beautiful halo of colours. Waxing? Waning? I never know!

Oh, Apologies Colin I thought your question marks were in relaton to myself mentioning Keith Moon,......Sorry.

THE ANSWER IS??????????..................................... :o

UK sees biggest Moon for 18 years

Some of the best views were along the south coast
Britain has seen its biggest and brightest Moon for 18 years, after its orbit brought it closer to Earth.
Dr Jim O'Donnell, of the Royal Greenwich Observatory, said it was also "higher in the sky than usual".

"The combination of those two very rare circumstances gives us a rather spectacular full Moon," he added.

The best views were in Devon, Cornwall, along the south coast, and the far north of Scotland. Cloud obscured the moon in north England and the Midlands.

Anton Vamplew, of the Royal Greenwich Observatory, told BBC News the Moon had reached "the position where the Sun was during the summer".

It appeared even higher in the sky because "the orbit of the Moon is slightly tilted relative to the orbit of the Earth around the Sun", he added.

In June, the Moon appeared lower in the sky than it had for 20 years, creating the optical illusion that it was larger - when viewed in relation to the horizon.

"ANTON VAMPLEW" ---  Wonderful! Just as 'Bleak House' concludes, up pops another Dickensian-sounding name. He'd have to be a real baddie, though, as it's too much like 'vampire' to be a dear old nunkie.

It's on P.13, para. 3.iii of our 'Customer Relations' handbook, Colin, funnily enough, and on the back page of today's race card: "We value our customers' experience at the course, and our staff will be more than happy to help you enjoy your day in any way possible. Please inquire at our Customer Help Desk if you require any personal attention during the day." At least, I take it that's what they mean... if not, that might account for the slightly surprised look on a couple of young chaps' faces... :o

Heck.... knew something was amiss this evening. The bottle's in the fridge, keeping nice and cool, so, uh, 'scuse me, suh, (treads on feet, shoves rudely past forumites in the front row), I's off now to grab me a glass... oops, sorry, sir - er, I mean, madam...
