At the Start
Mr Hoon, Mr Blair and Mr Straw insist that there is a military need for 600 more British troops to be deployed in Iraq to help the US forces. Opposition parties claim that it is a political rather than a military decision as Dubya has come under a bit of fire in these days of lead-up to the election about how much support there is for the coalition.
Here are a few facts:
Approximate totals of US forces (excluding the National Guard):
Army - 490,000
Marines - 175,000
Navy - 380,00
Air Force - 375,000
Reservists - 160,000
Currently some 140,000 to 150,000 members of the US army are deployed in Iraq.
I'll leave it to you to decide how essential militarily the 600 extra British forces are.
