Now I know many people associate caravanning and motorhomes with a person of a certain generation BUT now we have a dog to consider, I am looking at purchasing a motorhome for holidays in France, Ireland and the UK next year as I am loathed to leave Barney in a kennel or just leave him behind at all even with friends.

Does anyone have experience of owning a motorhome and what I should be looking for when purchasing one. I have been to look at a few, but I am totally confused. I didn't realise their were so many choices available.

Any help/advice would be very much appreciated.

They seem very expensive to me. I once looked into it but decided it would probably work out cheaper to rent accommodation in my preferred destination(s) rather than buy something that would depreciate substantially in a relatively short space of time. A lot would obviously depend on how much you intended to use it.

To give you an example, my local hire place wanted (this was a good 7 years ago) £460 per week for a four-berth motorhome. We managed to buy four flights to Dublin, a week's car hire and rent a three bedroom cottage for less than that.

While others immediately think of trailer-parks in Arkansas containing po' wite trash

Kathy.
I have just purchased one, last Saturday in fact.

On Thursday the SAT man is arriving to install my equipment which includes SKY and various dedicated Racing Channels.

Telephone may take a little longer so,if i can't find anyone with WLAN i might be without for a while.Although,i could get the Net through my Sat setup.

Hot and cold running water and all services from the mains.

Just need my Combat Clothing and Noddy Suit and i am back in the Army.

Rumours's link to Ebay prompted me to ask something I've been meaning to for a while now...

I have a number of items I think are worth selling (including Mme Orchid <_< ) but have no idea how to go about putting them on a site like Ebay. Is there and idiot's guide to on-line selling anywhere?

I've visited Ebay a couple of times but I just can't fathom the place out

Desert Orchid.
I never bid for anything. In the case of the MH there was a contact number and i called and requested a viewing.

As far as placing items,i am clueless as you are.
:D

You can in KÖLN,if you look.

You visited KÖLN a couple of weeks ago,did you not. :D

Register with ebay, go to My Ebay, then click the link on the left hand side which says "start selling". They have a fairly detailed and self explanatory guide there.

There was a motorhome for sale on Ebay at the weekend, it went for just over £15k from The Wirral. I am not sure I would spend that sort of money on Ebay... just in case there was a problem. I have been to see about 15 different motorhomes now, and I really like the idea of this mode of transport especially as some of them are quite luxurious inside.

Not sure if I would be brave enough to drive it though, although I have been told they are not that much bigger than a long wheeled based transit.

Little bit small, I would love a 6 berth, doors on the wrong side but apart from that..... perfect!

By the way has it got a cocktail cabinet inside and a static bed? B)

I did bid for a motorhome on Ebay... and have won it.

I am picking it up next week. I now have visions of my OH driving us to The Lake District, whilst I sit behind at the table watching TV and sinking a nice bottle of wine.

I know it sounds sad, but I can't wait to go away for our first weekend in it.

Krizon, when I come down to see you at Brighton or Fontwell races, or when we do our (threatened) car boot sale, I will be able to organise you a nice bacon sarnie and a cup of coffee as well and Barney will be have somewhere safe to go too. :D

Can't offer any advice with regards motorhomes but we have been caravanning for 6yrs now & I'm only 34Yrs old :o

Good for you Aldiniti.

My friends are already giving me stick already about owning a motorhome saying that I must be getting old before my time. <_< I disagree completely. As long as the OH empties the cassette bog, I think it will be a most enjoyable experience.

oh yes def mens work emptying the bog
we go on a lot of rallies through the year & you'd be surprised that 90% of those attending are 30 somethings with their kids :) a few OAP's but thats it, mind you with todays prices for things you tell me where you & a couple of kids could go away for the weekend meet up with friends & have entertainment laid on for £14 :o bloody good value & its nice to see kids running about fields actually playing that seeing them stuck in front the tv or PS2 all weekend :)

PS Kathy please call me Helen I still can't quite get used to being called by a horses name

No problem, Helen! B)

I must admit when I was choosing a name for this forum (and others), I found it a bit weird wanting to be called by the name of a horse. I found using the name "Kathy", alot easier.

No you don't as long as you have one for your main residence it fine, the exception are static caravans as you would also be using the tv at home at the same time eg whilst hireing it out
