The hosting is about to come to an end for the servers we are currently based on and as such I'm changing hosts (as promised).

Now I know I am going to have major problems transferring the database over, and being honest I would say its only 50/50 if I will succeed - mainly due to Supanames not letting me have shell access, as according to them it's a major security risk - even though plenty of other hosts allow it h:)

The outcome of this will be, if I do lose the DB then everything will be lost, so I suggest if there is any data or anything you want to keep, save any threads/pm's you need. If the worst comes to the worst, I might be able to trim the DB down to a couple of mb (its about 50 at the moment), and at least keep most the user data, but to do that I will have to delete most the posts on the board

I'm going to work most the day on this so if the board goes offline or anything you know why :)

If anyone has a good knowledge of how to back up databases, or php myhadmin please get in touch, as I know nothing and am having to learn as I go along - doesn't that fill you with confidence that everything will go ok :)

Col

Cheers for this, Colin. As always, if the costs increase, please let me know. I am sure that there are many others who would happily do the same.

Hi Col,

I am sure Escorial or Father Ted (ie Trig) may be able to assist with this, as I am sure they have both had to move servers during their time hosting forums via various servers.

the problem isn't how to get the DB (i have got that far lol) its how to restore it on the new server, as its 30mb and its too big (even after i deleted a load of old posts!)

I have the same problem Col, Ive saved the data base but restoring it aint easy - If you manage it then let me know how :D

Right, this is important

I will be changing servers this week.

The database backup was done around 20 minutes ago.

I will try to do another but it took all day to get one that isn't corrupt so don't bank on it.

The upside is, all the posts, members etc here as of 20 minutes ago will stay as they are, the downside is, anything posted from now will not be copied over, so if you need anything saving, save it!

Trig

I sort of know the guy who's hosting I'm moving to and he made the backup through phpMyAdmin for me (on a much faster connection than me!!!)

He is obviously the server owner and he says he will upload it direct for me rather than through control panel, and that way he won't get the time outs you get :)

The way I have been told to do it, is open the DB file, and split it, you must split at paragraphs though, and upload in sections (but that sounded complicated so took the easy option :) )

This is the place I'm using, I'm going to buy the gold package for $69.95 (roughly £39 a year) which i think is pretty good for what you get....unless someone can tell me different???

http://www.acebs.com/hosting/Acebs.com_Special_Offer

5GB bandwidth and 500MB of space is more than enough for us at the moment so shouldn't have any problems :)

BTW I forgot to mention, thanks for the offers of donations towards the costs for those who have posted and PM'd me :)

When I move the server over I am probably going to put a sticky up with affiliate links which I would appreciate if you could use if you are going to order anything from any of the shops listed, which would help with the running costs.

Coming up to Christmas I am sure many of you will be buying stuff from the likes of Argos, Index, House of Fraser, Marks and Spencer etc, maybe applying for a new loan, credit card or bank account. If you click the links I will put up we will get a small commision for what you spend (usually about 3% so don't worry I'll not be getting rich :) ), which will go towards the running costs. If there is any commision left over I will donate it to a competition sometime ion the new year, so everyone will benefit (and so people don't think i'm trying to profit from the links :) )

Yes, I will be doing a bit of retail therapy in the coming weeks and would be only too happy to use one of your links. It's the least I can do for all the crap you have to put up with on here at times! B)
