Multi Region Dvd Player

Hope no one minds me asking for help on something:
best friend as part of Crimbo pressie, wanted a DVD which it is only available in North American format. Although having a DVD player already, they are not sure if it can play NA format. So I was going to buy a DVD player, but obviously don't want to go silly as they already have one. Can any one suggest a very cheap DVD player which can cope with NA Format please?

Find out what they have - there's probably a code you can input via the remote control which will unlock it.

I tried that - 'Phillips'. 'Phillips what?' ' I dunno know!' Sorry - we are not very technical. Thank you though - might be able to have a sneaky look next time I am at their house.
Do you think it would be playable on most laptops? Sorry again don't know the model, but would be a fairly whizzy one as is a work one.
