Yep, after months of telling me there was an imminent hard drive failure and to buy a new one, its finally given up the ghost. To make matters worse, I actually cancelled an insurance policy about a month ago (I'd forgotten I even had it) designed to protect it against failure:lol: God when your lucks not in, it really isn't in. In truth, the chances are it would have taken so long to claim, process and argue over the pay out that the policy would have been useless anyway, but that's another issue.

So I'm after nominations please for a new one (models, types etc). I have a screen and a mouse and the old hard drive is due to find its way to a scrap heap unless I can trade it in to a salvage repair business (do they exist?).

My primary use is internet and so speed is more important than memory, although I obviosuly need it to be able to perform some basic stuff as it needs to be capable of doing work related stuff too (provided i can find someone to give me a job) and host video software etc. The one I've been using is something called Compaq Presario which lasted 3 years before giving up the ghost, and that proved useful for most things I wanted to do.

I'm toying witht he idea of using a laptop?

Any suggestions on models or things I need to try and ensure I've got on it to a certain specification as this is a bit of foreign language to put it mildly.

Consider putting a new bigger hard drive and some extra RAM in your present box. At Maplins this would cost you around £100-125 and even a technotwat like me can do it.

Tout Seul's suggestion is good - if you don't fancy having a go at it yourself, any shop worth its salt will have some kind of installation service. Memory (RAM) was dirt cheap last time I looked too.
