No doubt Dr. Marwan Koukash is a lovely man and that he is an asset to racing but I do think his naming of his horses is rather self-indulgent.

Just look at the Chester 3.20; he has three runners, GABRIAL'S KAKA, GABRIAL'S WAWA and GABRIAL THE THUG. In the 3.55 MANDY LAYLA and MANDY LEXI.

Presumably the names of his children/family are involved but speaking personally I find it very difficult to identify with these horses.

Dr. Koukash isn't the only culprit, Ballydoyle were just as guilty with the naming of WAS, UP, SOON, AFTER and so on. How can you take to a horse called UP?

There is a small positive Colin.

I have a friend who only got into racing because his daughter was named the same as one of his horses.

Regular Saturday punter now.

One his that he didn't name, still makes me chuckle, Fork Handles.

It doesn't do it for me. Personally I like horses named after historical figures - George Washington, Horatio Nelson etc. Having said that, if you buy the horses and pay the bills you can call them whatever you like.

I like clever names linked to the breeding.

Calling horses after historical figures or atrists, poets etc gives them a bit of gravitas and the names would therefore look good in the classic race records.

But the bottom line is that if you pay for the horse it gives you the privilege of naming it Naff if you want. If I ever get near to naming a horse it will take me weeks to work on a name for it.

Totally agree with you Colin, would imagine that Gabrial herself (or himself) will have difficulty remembering which horse was which in a few years time. I have the same problem with all these arabic named horses as well that have begum with an M or a T, after a while i just can't remember which horse won what race, which were good class animals and which were rubbish.
