I see The Times has brought in a registration requirement to read the articles with it looking likely that a charge is soon to be introduced. Imagine this is the start of it with others likely to follow suit?

It's Murdoch's big gamble; he's set to introduce it across most (if not all) of his news websites. It's basically his last ditch attempt to save the traditional newspaper business. If it works, expect to see the entire industry follow suit very quickly.

The Irish Times did something similar a while back (charging a fee for all content that was in the paper) and backed off pretty quickly if I recall.

I think if you subscribe to the newspaper you get the website free. The website is really excellent and if you've got an iPhone or iPad, the apps are great. The Guardian is the only site that probably won't follow this, because it's the only news site that makes a profit, but I wouldn't read that crap anyway. Telegraph or Times for me, but the Telegraph won't be going pay-only for a while yet, I wouldn't have thought.

Guardian website comfortably the best of the english papers.

I'm sure one of these days the Times will have an opinion on something or other but until then it will rest comfortably on the fence. Imagine paying for the Times, a bland website, when all the others are free!

Really hope this falls flat on it's face. There is room for a thriving paper and the web.

On a related issue, I'm not at all convinced by the ipad.

Guardian comments page is certainly good for a laugh at times...

Although there are some decent pieces, i always look forward the follow up comments taking apart extremists like Seamus Milne and Madeline Bunting. Not difficult admittedly

Best piece on the site recently was the one praising East Germany...
