It was four years ago yesterday that Stodge, Graham (who, sadly, no longer seems to post on here) and I said cheerio and see you soon to our forum member Nick Hagan at Lingfield. Nick died just a few weeks later at the age of 44, from pancreatitis, leaving his widow Frances and two lovely daughters.

Nick was an ebullient Geordie, who looked remarkably like John Belushi in his 'Blues Brothers' persona. I enjoyed super racecourse hospitality through the Hagans, and really liked their two bright, very amusing girls. Nick was a member of the FANTASY CRUSADER partnership and wanted to eventually do nothing but run horse partnerships. He asked me to look over a young filly for a partnership he was starting up, and we went off to Paul Thorman's Trickledown Stud in Hampshire to look over his selection. I was reluctant to go as I told Nick I knew bugger-all about youngsters, but he said as long as she had four legs and I thought she looked okay, he was pretty much sure he'd buy!

The youngster became ONE ALONE, who at the time of the inspection I had no idea was bred by our very own Songsheet! Nick put together the partnership, with Songsheet as second partner, and was looking forward enormously to seeing what James Given - the yard nearest to his home in Bury St Edmunds - would do with her. Sadly, this was denied Nick by his early and sudden death. Songsheet gallantly took over the running of the partnership at no cost to the members, who at one time included Ardross, myself, and my mother. ONE ALONE had a career blighted by injury and in spite of showing good promise over hurdles, was retired to her second trainer's stables - Jean-Rene Auvray's in Upper Lambourn, where she lives today.

I'd intended to put up this little word about our delightful, late forumite earlier, but I hope his memory won't fade from here. He enjoyed the forum, adored his family, loved racing as much as his wife's salmon en croute, and was always generous with the champagne! Cheers, Nick!

Jon, was it really four years ago??? I didn't realise Ellie was at JR's stable still. I thought she had gone to France to be bred from by JR's mum. It's strange, I was thinking about little Ellie last week when I watched one of JR's backed right in and sluice home in a bumper without so much as a penny on from me. Can't believe we lost Nick so long ago.

I remember doing a fortune on the horse yon day at Folkestone when a young Ryan Moore couldn't (so he said) get the horse to race alone against the stand rail, as per Julie's instructions.

Thanks for reminding us, Jon. A very sad loss and, as Dave says, it seems incredible that it was all of 4 years ago. hope his family are keeping well.

I was with Nick at Doncaster when he bought One Alone - the only time I met him. A real gentleman and sadly missed.

For what it's worth, I thought he looked more like Norman Stanley Fletcher than Belushi but the light in the bar at Donny wasn't that good!

Can't argue with that descrip, archie! :D I was in touch with Frances and the girls (Joanna and Katie) a few times after attending Nick's funeral, last time being Christmas. They're managing, but Nick's absence was still evident. I'll be giving Frances a call before I go to Norfolk as, with Suffolk being just next door, there's a chance she might be up for a nosh out!

Dave - sorry, I meant to imply that 'Ellie' was finally given to JR and that's where I last knew she was. I'll ask Alison next time she's at Lingfield how the little darling is doing. Like most of us in the original partnership - as you were - it was such a shame that she was held back by critical time out through injury. I saw her a good deal at Julie's when I visited, before she returned to JR, and she was in seventh heaven out in the fields with BARRANTES and other gals. And chubby, too!

I met Nick (and Frances) at Ascot (along with Krizon et al). Hardly seems like four months never mind four years. I fancied Fantasy Believer's chances in the Ayr Gold Cup and was trying to wangle a post-race party invitation from Nick :)

Yes, as others have said, Nick is much missed. I saw him on many occasions at Lingfield and Goodwood. You couldn't wish to meet a kinder, more pleasant soul whose knowledge of our sport was considerable but would always listen with interest to the views of others.

Thanks for the thread, Jon, and Happy Easter to all :)

Gosh so long - I remember speaking to him only once when we had secured Ellie at the sales - hope she is happy and well with JRA and Alison .

Well, just got off the phone with Frances, and I'm going to be staying with her in... Stowmarket! She's moved, she has a new partner (all will be revealed when we meet up), Katie has her own flat, and I might see a vastly-grown Joanna if I'm lucky! We had a great laugh and I'm so looking forward to seeing her again. I told her we'd been reminiscing about Nick and she sends her best wishes to all who met or remember him. :)

I'm hoping that we can spend the 12th being relentlessly horsey, visiting BARRANTES, then ICEMAN, and hopefully Kirsty's darling horses, including, of course, the famous Ted - KAHLUA BEAR! (Kirsty says he'll do rollovers for Polos, so I'm keen to see this display.) And then all out for dinner, if everyone can make it. (Fingers x'd.)

Do they know on FF that Ted does rollovers for Polos ?

No wonder his mind wasn't on the job when they were whitewashed in last year's Test series !

Yay! Will be viewing ICEMAN at Cheveley Park at 2.00 pm on the 12th and hopefully bringing Frances with me. Jinnyj - are you available for a trip up the road to see him? Chris Richardson offered to show me PIVOTAL and 'anyone I'd like to see', so it could be a nice little viewing. Apparently ICEMAN will have a morning bonk at 9.30 a.m. and an afternoon bonk at 3.30 p.m., so allowing for him to enjoy a shower and a post-coital cigarette, and the stud staff to have lunch, we figured this was the best time. By tea-time, I reckon the boyo's ready for his teddy and pyjamas!

Henceforth Lord H is to be known as ICEMAN...

... what? He cometh - but - twice a day? No wonder he doesn't post as much as he used to!

Gareth, he's not in the (British/Irish) Stallions 2007 book, so possibly he's not in residence. I'm looking forward to seeing who's there, and will find out if we're not told by someone better-informed than me before then. Would you like his autograph if he's at home?

Don't you go leading my boy Teds astray Aunty K - he's a good lad and loves his mum. Can't be having you turning him into some sort of slut making him roll over for polos, or any other titbits you're offering!!!!

Not only will I have him squirming joyfully for his mints, but I shall give Teddy-weddy's tummy-tum-tum a good tickly-wickling with Mr Insy-winsy Spider!

Chevely Stallions include Iceman, Carnival Dancer, Kyllachy, Medicean, Pivotal and Where or When, I have my own favourite.

STARCRAFT? Also on the block. We (that's Jules et moi) used CARNIVAL DANCER with REACH THE WIND, begetting the sweet filly known as 'Bonny' who is now in Germany! I do want to see CD, too. PIVOTAL would be my favourite if I owned him! - a horse which has shot up from £4,000 to today's 'bonkers' fee ain't bad at all!

Well, Domski, you know what they say - "when Mummy's away, the boy will play!" Get your arse over to Newmarket and give him a cuddle!
