Really sad state of affairs this! at any time of the year but to happen just short of Christmas makes it twice as bad....
Innocent people going about their own business and this happens, look at the figures of people who have lost their lives through a knife being used either stabbed-slashed a really alarming number in the U/K this past year.....

LONDON (Reuters) - A knife-wielding man has killed one person and critically injured five others in a series of apparently random morning rush-hour attacks across north London just days before Christmas, police say.

A man with a history of mental illness was arrested in connection with the stabbings on Thursday.

Knife crime is rising sharply across the country, prompting the government to consider new laws raising the minimum age of knife ownership and extending the range of banned weapons.

Last year 272 people were knifed to death nationwide, an increase of 35 percent in five years, while at the same time 80 people were shot dead.

In some parts of London the problem is so bad that schools have introduced metal scanners to root out hidden knives.

Police said the suspect, described as about 30 years old and of Turkish origin, had driven in a car to at least five different locations to stage the attacks.

"We could be dealing with a person who has mental illness, certainly the person in custody has a history of mental illness," Chief Superintendent Simon O'Brien told reporters.

"It looks like a complete random cross section, both male and female, ethnicity as well, it seems to be random."

One 20-year-old woman was taken to the London heart hospital and three men were in surgery on Thursday. A fourth man was in a high dependency unit.

A spokesman for the capital's Metropolitan Police said that while such attacks were not unheard off, the fact that the attacker appeared to be driving around and selecting his victims at random did make it unique.

"I don't recall anything like that before in London," he told Reuters.

Thursday morning's attack was the second fatal stabbing in two days in north London.

On Wednesday a shop keeper was knifed to death in Wood Green after he chased two thieves who stole two bottles of spirits from his shop.

Yet another result of the "Care in the Community" policy introduced by the Thatcher (Remember her? Slightly to the left of the present incumbent) government. There were many professionals at the time who warned about the end result of what was being sold as a more liberal way to deal with mental illness, but they were ignored in the interests of closing the specialist hospitals. There were quite a few in Surrey. Most became sites for expensive housing estates.

I lived in Camden for ten years and I was always amazed by the number of people on the streets who should have been in care.Having said that my sympathies are with the victims.

Thatcher (Remember her? Slightly to the left of the present incumbent) government.
Ok, time for me to batten down the hatches...... ;) :D best bloody thing to happen to this country in a long time, was Thatcher.....

You're far too young to remember successful manufacturing industry, trains that kept to time and had an excellent safety record, then the failed monetarist policies of Milton Friedman, support for murderous dictators such as Pol Pot and Augusto Pinochet, the creation of a two-tier workforce by contracting out public services which led to the savage cutting of pay and conditions for the weakest, mainly women, and.....well, I could go on and on but I make you about 13 or 14 when she resigned, so you tell me what made her, what was it? oh yes, the best bloody thing to happen to this country in a long time. (And I assume that you're not talking about Gibraltar...)

Ok, fair enough, LordH...might have known you'd be the one to cut me down!!! She had the right ideas though, there was no bullshitting her, none of this bollocks about handing out benefits to anyone who wanted it reagardless of whether or not they wanted a job, she wouldn't have entertained Bush the way Blair has done, etc, etc......& of course, she wouldn't have banned hunting either!!! :D :D

With Brian on this entirely, as was MENCAP at the time. The charity was vociferous in that specialist centres, where there were marvellous facilities such as therapy pools, gyms and extensive gardens for exercise, with fully-supervised coach or bus outings for the more able, should not be closed.

There was a very large centre such as that in North Staffs, with every facility, plus loads of regularly-visiting services such as chiropodists, dentists, hairdressers, etc. It was beautifully set in extensive grounds and boasted fully-qualified nursing staff on hand 24 hours.

The Conservatives ran roughshod over the arguments laid out by various mental health organizations and closed it. When I last saw it, it was boarded and semi-derelict. The occupants, some of whom had been there for the entire lives and were very happy and productive in their own unique ways, were sent to live 'in the community' in small houses and only one 'supervisor'.

There were no, or tiny, gardens, no therapy pool, no gym, and the community greeting consisted of infuriated residents standing around with placards protesting at their relocation to their area. Their prime interest was how their properties would be devalued by having 'a bunch of nutters' living next to them. So much for an understanding welcome into 'care in the community'.

It wasn't as if it was even done for cost effectiveness, which as an exercise it certainly was not. Buying up loads of separate and widely-spread different types of housing meant higher maintenance costs, far higher costs for nurses and specialists who know had to visit, and far higher 24-hour supervision costs, since the day supervisor had to hand over to a night supervisor paid for their unsocial hours. Having separate houses meant employing cooks to visit the houses to prepare meals, instead of one huge kitchen supplying the single centre. But no, the Government was determined to bypass the fact that not all of us ARE born equal in mental functioning, and thousands of us require long-term or lifelong care.

When occupants of the centre were supervised, their medication was monitored very carefully and it was ensured it was taken. When they were forced into their new 'homes' they often became far more volatile (quite possibly because of the stress of forced relocation and outside hostility) and there were many instances of them violently resisting medication. Some of them died as a result of not being made to take it, and there were runaways who were found dishevelled and distressed because of the inability to supervise them, and one or two died as a result of exposure. So much for their 'care'.

Yes S/L she was possibly the worse thing ever to happen to this country her and her doctrines!! no not because see was a women!! I am not knocking that, her policies have helped to lead to the type of ante social behaviour that we now have, and a lot more too, but being that it’s Christmas I feel its actually not the correct time or worth the hassle debating......

She turned the Police on ordinary workers, people, trade unionist (Miners of all countries too, not only Welsh) who only wanted to do a job of work and earn a wage? (How would you feel if they stopped you from doing a job or working to earn a wage?) that’s very much part of Thatcherism, so will say no more on the given subject, Brian as outlined a few but they are to numerous to mention ............ Merry Christmas

I do totally agree with BRIAN H also MERLIN regards the situation, it was a terrible piece of legislation by Thatcher, which has caused untold problems to society, Brian is right the grounds of these institutions, have been sold to the speculators and they have made vast fortunes.

regards,

terry.

"She wouldn't have entertained Bush the way Blair has done"
You obviously don't remember the Thatcher years! What do you think that this was all about?
