BSkyB has told rival operator Virgin Media that it will be pulling a string of its major channels at the end of this month.

Talks between the two companies broke down last night after they failed to reach an agreement on the rate Virgin Media would pay for the satellite broadcaster's basic channels such as Sky One, Sky Two, Sky Three, Sky News and Sport News. Premium channels Sky Sports and Sky Movies will remain on the cable platform.

I hope they sort this out as I can see NTL retaliating by pulling their channels from Sky, which won't be good for the media in general :(

Virgin in a partnership with the BBC own all the UK TV chanells, such as Gold.
Virgin own Flextech which is responsible for Bravo and Living.

We were discussing this earlier in work. Seems Sky are well pissed orf at the customer drain to Virgin/ntl, and this is the plan of action to combat it. Wouldn't you think a more sensible policy would be to drop their prices to match Virgin/ntl. If you already have one providers equipment, you are hardly likely to jump ship to the other provider if there is no price drop.

Isn't it a matter of both parties playing chicken?

An agreement is mutually beneficial surely.
Quite.

There will be an agreement on this, I'll wager.

I have no doubt there will be an agreement in due course. Sky would not want to lose cable viewer base -- me thinks their ad revenue is a bit important in all this.
