I’m surprised none of our other Irish members have expressed their utter outrage at the fact that it is illegal to buy off-licensed gargle after 10 o’clock in the evening.

What kind of a poxy law is that? Is it true that our binge drinking culture is caused by people buying beer after 22.00? I have often cycled down to the offie in the evening for a couple of nightcaps, and that pleasure was denied me last night.

And I am not allowed to take a few cans home from the pub. What a load of horseshit. I don’t get to go out very much recently, and when I do we have to go home early for the babysitter. Drinking carry out the odd night has kept me sane the past 14 months. I guess it means I will have to make sure my fridge is stocked up for emergencies all the time, which will mean I will end up drinking more. Thank you very much, lawmakers.

When was this poxy law introduced? How come we didn’t have a referendum over this rather than the poxy Lisbon treaty?

Discuss.

It's not quite as annoying as being barred from buying a bottle of wine before 12.30 on a Sunday. It is still stupid.

Having said that I have never failed to regret buying a carry out from a pub at closing time, but that's my own fault.

It's all a ruse to get us back into pubs.

You might have a point. I've never been one for drinking at home and thankfully @ €4.30 a pop in tallaght I can go for a drink any night I want but not everyone is single and careless like me. Its a shocking law.

Kids can seriously interfere with your drinking. The only answer is to buy another fridge, a designated beer fridge. Every time you find yourself in the supermarket, throw a couple of innocuous beers into the bottom of the trolley.

Are Irish pubs the only business in the world that when demand reduces the prices increase???

looking at the yobs last Friday half pissed @ 5-30 pm ,aged 12-16 drinking scrumpy openly in street and intimidating every one that past them, I went over for an Echo, they treat me with a little bit of respect the fact that I stand 6-00" tall and weigh in at 21 stone odd ....they ought to stop serving-selling ale in cans bottles at 3pm at all off licenses and supermarkets then it may stop this sort of thing happening...

Surely if you wanted a bottle or two or cans you can arrange to buy them a few days before, before 3pm..................????

To be honest it wouldn't affect me too much as i do most of my drinking in pubs/clubs, but i would tend to agree with the concensus view that it accomplishes nothing (especially given that most of the yobs round my way are well pissed by about 5 in the evening).

I'm sure the pain will be even more acute in Bar's area, given that the locals will be denied the pleasure of seeing Bar cycling home, nightcap in hand. Suppose it was one of those simple pleasures that's sometimes taken for granted; if I attempted to cycle back from my local off-license with a nightcap, the only thing i would have in me hand when I got home would be my nose..

It's kind of ironic seeing as McDoul,McDole,McDowell wanted to give cafe's full alcohol licenses not so long ago. Than the Vintners got their way with that too didn't they....

McDowell had the right ideas but the wrong manner. A sad loss to the Irish political scene in my opinion. There was plenty of public backing behind that which he could have positively harnassed to defeat the FF backbenchers with vested interests had he not been so universally disliked.

Sounds to me like they need a law that stops the selling of alcohol to 12-16 year olds.
