Gallop Report – Monday 30th August 2010
Welcome to our weekly round up from the gallops, featuring news from all the leading Newmarket yards from last Monday (23rd) to Saturday (28th).
Last Monday, Saeed Bin Suroor had a number of nice types out on the Snailwell Tapeta Track and one to really catch the eye was the Oasis Dream once raced victorious colt Bronze Prince.
Partnered in his gallop by Dara O’Donohoe the 7f Wolverhampton winner looked in fine form as he came from behind Hoodie to assert in pleasing style going 5L clear. Entered on Thursday at Wolverhampton, this unbeaten colt could easily be one to keep on the right side of.
Morahin was another to catch the eye and the Tobougg half brother to the quirky but talented Aramram looks one to keep an eye out for. Led by one of the resident lead horses, Morahin showed a tidy turn of foot to power 6 – 8L clear of his companion. Despite having a few mini setbacks, Morahin should be on the track in due course and looks a really nice sort.
Sowaylm is another who is impressing at present and taken along by a blinkered Sugar Ray, the Tobougg colt showed a ready turn of foot to burst 4L clear when working over the 7f. He has been working well for some time and holds entries at Musselburgh (Friday) & Thirsk (Saturday) where a mark of 92, could well be exploited.
On Tuesday 24th, all eyes on the Snailwell Tapeta Track were on Atlantis Star who led by Wajir showed a smart turn of foot to burst 12L clear of the named companion. Saeed Bin Suroor’s Cape Cross colt hasn’t been seen since disappointing in a sales race at Newmarket last Autumn but he looks in very good form at present.
Over on the public gallops, Luca Cumani had a couple of workers being put through their paces on The Flat Gallop over on the racecourse.
Sour Mash (Jean Pierre Guillambert) really caught the eye in his gallop, working markedly better than Goodwood winner Start Right and Kirsty Milzcarek ridden Gold Rules. Going a good gallop over 8f, the Newmarket maiden winner appeared in great form and was value to a good 3L by the end of the work.
In the other gallop Mabait (Kieren Fallon) gave the impression he could be back in winning form soon and he readily impressed working 3/4L in front of a solid 100 rated companion pulling away from a useful lead. Mabait who was a narrow 2nd in the Victoria Cup earlier in the year dead heated on his latest start at Pontefract and could well head to Ireland in a couple of weeks to take in the Solonaway Stakes at the Curragh on Irish Oaks day.
Over on the Al Bahathri, Henry Cecil gave the highly regarded Aviate a strong piece of work and led by 1000 Guineas heroine Jacqueline Quest, the Tom Queally partnered Aviate burst 10L clear in no uncertain terms. Aviate was bitterly disappointing when down the field in the Oaks but she looks a class act at home, and when she returns to 10f she could prove one of the best fillies in training.
Another trainer who likes to use the Al Bahathri is Sir Mark Prescott and without giving too much away, he looks to have another blot on the handicap under his care.
65 rated Art Machine could prove to be seriously well handicapped and Sir Mark will definitely be up to old tricks with this seriously well handicapped Sky Mesa filly who runs in an apprentice handicap tomorrow at Southwell. The very talented apprentice Rosie Jessop takes the reigns for the 8f 0-75 handicap and without the handicapper being able to assess until a week tomorrow, it gives Sir Mark a further 12 days to exploit the same mark in another handicap also taking to account she will not have to carry a penalty if she is successful in this apprentice race.
On Tuesday Art Machine who was wearing Blinkers looked in top order picking up her 80 rated companion and bursting 3L effortlessly clear. This was another massive indication that Art Machine who has been working well for around 4 weeks is well ahead of the handicapper at present and whilst the blinkers are not on tomorrow they were clearly used on Tuesday to sharpen her up. She could bid to follow up at Thirsk on Saturday where she is entered in another 8f contest, this time in a 0-70 for 3yo’s only.
On Wednesday (25th), attention returned to the Snailwell Tapeta Track of Godolphin’s and all eyes were clearly on the attractive Grey colt Sahara Kingdom. A winner of both his races last season, the powerful colt was led by Modeyra but showed he was certainly not lacking in class as he powered 4L clear of his companion hard on the bridle, he is a very exciting type for the latter part of the season.
Al Zir also pleased in his 7f workout with one of the resident lead horses, whilst there was encouraging signs from Willing Foe who stretched away from his lead horse in another 7f gallop.
Henry Cecil was again on the Al Bahathri on Wednesday morning and his Newmarket maiden winner Frankel was the stand out eye catcher from his group of workers.
Led by proven group performer Tranquil Tiger, Frankel who was partnered by Tom Queally looked in great order as he showed a very smart turn of foot to burst well clear of his companion. Always held in some regard, the words 2000 Guineas have been heard being mumbled around Warren Place this past week or so.
Of the other Cecil horses to work, Plato has been showing enough to suggest he will be winning soon and in a gallop with Moose Moran he was well on top at the end of the 7f gallop.
Panoptic (Kelly Harrison) was another who could have improvement in her and having been very disappointing when a warm order on debut at Newmarket, she looked in top form working better than consistent handicapper Whirly Dancer in a good piece of work over 6f, she could be expected to win her maiden next time out.
Completing the strong of trainers on Newmarket’s premier Polytrack was John Gosden and his main eye-catcher appeared to be the one raced Palitana. Very green on her debut when partnered by Salem Golam she looks sure to leave that well behind her next time, and looked in top form as she took 8L out of her lead horse (Flower Fairy) when working over 7f. She holds some entries later in the week.
Lucy Wadham isn’t a trainer I would normally take heed of, but she looks to have a really nice type in Picabo. Working on the Flat Gallop, the filly who made her debut at Newbury looked in top form as she held command over two Michael Bell trained fillies and she will certainly be of interest if her sights were lowered next time.
Friday’s are normally quite quiet on the Newmarket gallops but a couple of trainers worked some useful prospects over on the Al Bahathri.
Peter Chapple-Hyam has been having rather a quiet season but keep an eye out for Cloud Rock when he steps up in class shortly. The Folkestone winner looked in very good form on Friday morning and booted 5L clear of Street’s Of War when he worked over 6f and the Racing Post Trophy entrant would be a strong bet in most condition / novice contests in the coming weeks.
Ed Dunlop was another working his on the Al Bahathri and he appears to have some nice juveniles for the second part of the season.
An attractive Diamond Green colt who is a half brother to the Britannia Stakes winner Fareer, is one that has been catching the eye for the past couple of weeks and he impressed in his latest gallop. Partnered by the yards apprentice Ashley Hamblett, the unnamed colt took 4L out of Salaamie (Adrian McCarthy) in what looked a decent 7f gallop. The Diamond Green colt is held in high regard by the yard and is one to keep an eye out for in the coming weeks.
Lemon Drop Red is another who is catching the eye at present and in his 7f gallop he to moved nicely going a couple of lengths away from Tamareen who has fair form on the track this season.
Tanfeeth was partnered in his gallop by Richard Hills and having been very disappointing when expected to make a winning debut at Sandown, he looks set to put that firmly behind him when he heads to Kempton on either Friday or Saturday. The Singspiel colt really caught the eye on Friday powering 4L clear of Muhandis hard on the bridle and is a colt the yard think an awful lot of.
Sadafiya didn’t let her supporters down at Wolverhampton last time and off a mark of 76, I would be hopeful that a follow up win in handicap company could be imminent. Working 6f with an unraced companion called Entrance, Sadafiya showed a bright turn of foot to stride away from 4L in impressive style.
With plenty of quality racing around on the Saturday (28th) again the gallops were not over busy and it gave us time to catch up with a couple of our regular stables.
Arctic Cosmos (William Buick) was a real eye-catcher of John Gosden’s string and working over 9f on the Flat Gallop, the Goodwood winner looked in really good order. Led by William Van Gogh and accompanied by a recent maiden winner, the St Leger entrant looked in really exciting form as he pulled his way into a comfortable 3L lead. He was asked no questions by Buick who was at length not to let go of his horses head, and the margin between him and his companions could have been significantly further.
Zigato done nothing wrong winning at Haydock last time and he looks to have improved again. Led by Dhaamer he showed a really willing attitude to stride out by 3L and looks to be progressing all the time.
Gosden was also out on the Al Bahathri 30 minutes later and of his string of workers there, Midnight Caller (William Buick) could well be something special. Led by a proven group horse, the filly who was 2nd on debut pulled nicely for her head in behind her lead but once asked to go about her work, she showed an explosive turn to foot to power 10L clear in the 10L gallop. She reminds much of the yard of Rainbow View when she was a young filly and big things are expected of her. She would have to be a confident bet the next time she races (Tuesday 31st August).
Showcasing has been quiet this season but he appears to be over his problems and could head to the Sprint Trophy this weekend. Led by High twelve in his latest piece of work he looked in very good form readily held together as he asserted in his 6f gallop.
Highest is considered one of the yards best 2yo’s and working 7f under Nicky Mackay the Dynaformer filly moved impressively clear of Point Out in no uncertain terms. This was an impressive gallop and she is firmly one to note.
Palitana again impressed ahead of her next run and she moved clear of her lead horse over 7f. Led by another smart type she picked up in impressive style looking as if she would be near impossible to beat next time out.
Jeremy Noseda had workers on the Al Bahathri and an unraced colt called Garde Cotiere looked as if he could be potentially useful. Working with Illustrious Prince, he looked in really good form impressively going away from his elder companion. He holds a host of group entries later in the year.
Also working was Newmarket winner Peter Martin’s who took command in his group going toe to toe with another 2yo, going on from a couple of nice older types as he worked over 6.5f in an early morning gallop.
Sir Michael Stoute’s Al Bahathri workers completed our round up and it was pleasing to see Workforce back in very good form. Led by London Stripe, the runaway Derby winner looked in really good form as he burst clear over 7f.
Another to work very well was Mascarene and whilst disappointing to date, the filly worked very impressively with two other fillies suggesting a win would not be too far away.
Richard Hills was in to sit on one of the yards better 2yo’s and partnering Mutayaser he returned all smiles as his companion burst 4L of two other juveniles in a strong 7f piece of work. Entered at Leicester tomorrow he is certainly one to note, although it is unlikely he will get too hard a ride first time out.
Caraboss is the final one to give a heads up to and the Queens Filly looks a very nice prospect for the backend of the season. Led by a fair 3yo, she showed a really willing attitude to burst clear over 7f, she is entered at Salisbury at the end of the week.
That completes this weeks round up and hopefully we have uncovered some nice sorts for you to keep an eye out for.
Good Luck
Chris
