David’s Well will get his handicap mark after the 2:20 at Plumpton today. He’s odds-on for this Class4 maiden which follows two Class3 efforts, the last of which was a couple of weeks ago at Newbury where he caught the eye finishing strongly in rotten conditions. He caught Racing Post eye, too (unfortunately):

David's Well, reported to have been unsuited by soft ground when well held at the course on his hurdles debut, shaped with a good deal of promise despite similarly testing conditions on this occasion, looking a little unfortunate not to finish fourth. He definitely wants further and can find a maiden/novice hurdle.

The race today is 2m again and I suppose the best case scenario is to see him struggle - beaten, even - to gain a comfortable mark, then go up in distance for his debut handicap on better ground (when he will carry my money :)).

Whilst I’m indulging in these somewhat fanciful tales, there’s another one that was due out at Plumpton today only to be withdrawn.. Maybe next time.

Sanitiser was given a very tender ride last time, incurring raised eyebrows from the stewards and fairly generous comment from the Racing Post.

An enquiry was held into the running and riding of SANITISER, ridden by Caoilin Quinn, trained by Gary Moore, who appeared to be tenderly handled up the home straight to finish fourth, beaten 11 ½ lengths. The rider and the trainer’s representative, were interviewed and shown recordings of the race; the Veterinary Officer examined SANITISER during routine testing and found nothing to report. The rider stated his instructions were to get the gelding settled and to drop in and find the better ground around the outside. Quinn explained that SANITISER was over racing for the first half of the race having recently run on the flat, and made a few jumping errors throughout. Quinn further explained that he felt it prudent to allow the horse to fill up turning in as following his runs on the flat, he was aware that the horse often finds little off the bridle; Quinn also stated that SANITISER made a mistake jumping the final hurdle, carrying its head awkwardly and subsequently hanging left-handed; a fact that he reported at scales. Their explanations were noted.Stewards

Sanitiser looked sure to play a part in the finish when apparently cruising in fourth place two from home, but his jockey didn't get after him at that stage, probably not holding on to very much, and the principals were soon out of reach. This was certainly an eyecatching first run over hurdles for this stable. The stewards held a running and riding inquiry, noting the jockey's explanations that the horse overraced, didn't jump fluently and hung.RP
