Gardaí dismissed over alleged brawl outside US Embassy

By Cormac O’Keeffe
TWO gardaí involved in an alleged brawl outside the US Embassy in Dublin were dismissed from the force yesterday.

The Garda Press Office yesterday issued a statement saying the men had been dismissed by the Garda Commissioner following “due process and an internal investigation”.

But the statement said no other comment could be made as the men had a right to appeal the decision.

“Both officers are now entitled to avail of the statutory appeals procedure and no further comment can be made pending the outcome of those proceedings, if commenced,” said the statement.

Last month, it emerged that an internal Garda Síochána inquiry had recommended that the men should either resign from the force, or be sacked, after they were found guilty of a series of serious disciplinary charges

Yesterday, Garda Commissioner Noel Conroy decided to dismiss the two men from the Garda Síochána.

It was reported at the time of the incident in June 2005 that one of the two armed gardaí went drinking while on duty at the US Embassy.

The garda was challenged by his colleague when he returned to the embassy in Ballsbridge and a row began. It was further alleged that the garda who had been drinking gave his firearm to a uniformed garda at the garda security post outside the embassy, got into a car and drove away.

He was stopped a short time afterwards in Ballymun and arrested on suspicion of drink-driving. The Justice Department subsequently apologised to US Ambassador James C Kenny
