I do not like cats but for some reason I seem to attract them.

Dogs are a different ball game. A good dog can be better than any human company and their 'love' for you is entirely unconditional.

I would have to admit I am not particularly a people person either. Outside of this forum, where I have 'virtual' friends, and the Men's Shed where I have acquaintances, I only have one person I would call a friend and he lives too far away for us to see each other. Anyone else would be maybe an ex-colleague. There is only one other surviving member of my department from work and we haven't been in touch for eight years other than exchanging Christmas cards. My best friend died 16 years ago aged 53 and two of my closest work colleagues also died aged 54 and 50, leaving young families motherless. Sometimes I wonder if I am a curse to them and I often ask myself why I survived and they didn't.

I am not even in touch with my former football team mates. The last we saw each other was when most of us were about 40 and we had a reunion kickabout with the younger guys who inherited our places in the team but haven't been in touch since.

But generally speaking I tend not to let it bother me. My family would always be most important and when we got our dog in 2000 he became our social focus outside of the family.

But I do like most animals and will happily spend time in the garden trying to attract birds to feed out of my hand.

Mrs O says she wonders if I am Francis of Assisi reincarnate.
