Oscars

I'm not sure No Country For Old Men should be so short, but I've only seen Atonement of the five Best Pic noms so far and that won't win. I'll be seeing the other 4 over the next week and a half so maybe something will jump out at me.

I have jumped on the Marion Cotillard Best Actress bandwagon following her recent successes in addition to my Ellen Page bet.

I first saw Cotillard in Taxi back in the late 90's - great fun, very sexy, but I never expected to see her competing for this award.

Julie Christie is clearly weak in the market, but I am now pretty exposed (in special bet stake terms) to her victory.

Let's hope Hollywood isn't feeling too sentimental.

The winner was a fine film. But There will be blood should have shaded it for me. Both had minor flaws but TWBB had more substance and greater originality. It posed questions too....

Micheal Clayton was very good in a bog standard way.

Havent seen the others

There Will Be Blood was the only one of the 5 that strived to be something truly special, and got a lot of the way there. It was never going to win the Oscar though, just too odd, too mad (particularly the glorious ending).

Michael Clayton is as good a film of it's genre as you're likely to see, without ever transcending it.

Juno is very watchable and just manages to stay on the right side of being incredibly annoying (your mileage may vary). You can easily understand why it's made the most money of the 5 noms by a long way.

Atonement has the fatal flaw of characters that it's impossible to care about.

No Country For Old Men... I don't know. Most Coen films take a second viewing to sink in properly so I'll give it the benefit of the doubt for now, but I'm trying to understand what all the fuss is about.

I thought it was a pretty straightforward piece of storytelling but imaginitively presented without being indulgent

The ending was relatively poor. DDL went OTT and any empathy or understanding of the main character (s) was diminished.

NCFOM greatest strengths are the wonderful performances and cinematic skills as well as expert pacing. But as an actual tale, it was just a little too long and really quite lightweight

Stil. At least it wasnt the godawful Braveheart or Titanic

Oh god

Maybe cos im not a Coen fan i would rate this as by far their best film.

The only one of theirs I have really enjoyed (although Fargo was ok)

I am a massive Coen brothers fan, and it is not their best film.

It was good, though.

I would rank Fargo, Raising Arizona, Blood Simple and The Big Lebowski as superior
Fargo is the obvious, undeniable classic. Watching it lose all those Oscars to the English Patient... which one would you rather sit through tonight?

Fargo was good but certainly not a masterpiece IMO. The Big Lebowski was dire nonsense but I loved Millers Crossing and The Hudsucker Proxy

Im in no great rush to watch either again. There again not many films stand up to repeated Casablanca type viewings
