Has anyone ever gone on one of these, where you are told your accomodation when you arrive at your destination? I haven't booked a holiday yet and was looking at the late deals - "Our Choice" 5 star half board in Tunisia works out about half the price as getting in a named 5 star hotel.

I suspect it would be a disaster waiting to happen, with holidays you tend to get what you pay for, but if anyone has any experiences of these I'd be grateful to hear.

I've heard of various people doing these with the full gamut of experiences from very bad to mediocre to great. You pays your money....

I've heard mostly praise. I think some travel agents will ask you to state the areas you would really hate to stay in and what things are most important to you and try to please you. It'd also be a lot easier and more likely to be successful if you were either travelling alone or as a couple. I wouldn't risk it with a family. I find it almost impossible to find hotels that have a room big enough for my entire brood so I think it highly unlikely we'd be allocated a room like that on arrival.

I used to do it when I knew the range of hotels that they could allocate. I used to specify minimum 4 star when I went to Majorca and had some real bargains. Sometimes they are happy to state that the hotel will be one from their brochure so that you can check all of the hotels in your category. If they won't go that far you might wonder why?

Good point. I was looking at doing it on the internet, but there is sod all saving - might as well get a few assurances from a rep.

My aunt & uncle often book these kind of holidays & like Diver, they stipulate a minimum rating for the hotel. They seem to like them ok & get some good bargains.

Btw, are you set on going to Tunisia? Have you been there before? I only ask as it's not a place that I'd be desperate to go back to tbh, I didn't really like the place. The resort we stayed in, Port El Kantouai, was fine but once you got out of it the rest of the country was pretty horrible.

I don't really care where I go. I just thought if you were guaranteed a 5 star hotel it might be safer option. No other resorts seem to have accomodation on arrival packages of more than 3 stars. Air conditioning is an absolute must for me.

To be honest, if I was confident that we'd get a bit of half decent weather here I'd be happy to head for West Cork or Kerry, or maybe pop over to Wales. The real sizzling heat you get on these sun holidays does nothing for me.
