I must admit when I'm looking at pace I just generally use the one ATR have and I've looked at the predictive pacesetters for the Lennox tomorrow and they have Pogo as a hold up horse just based on the Queen Anne I presume. I'm not happy about this position and I was just wondering what options have I got in terms of getting access to a better site or is that even possible? Would I have to construct one myself. I don't mind paying a bit but I don't want a full frigging Timeform sub. Any ideas?

Sorry, Euro, can't help other than to agree that the ATR one is flawed. I have only ever referred to it occasionally and never let it affect my studies.

The racecards in the Weekender have a wee black box before each horse in the races with an indication of a horse's usual running style ( L-Leads, P-Presses, M-Midfield, H-Hold-up). Again, I tend to use it infrequently, usually only for races at courses like Chester or Musselburgh... or Goodwood.

But it's a whopping £5.20 per week. I buy it because my MO requires the hard copy paper Form that I can annotate. One of these days - this has just occurred to me - I must put up a photo of a typical race I've studied. It might help relative newbies understand how I come up with my figures (says he, conscious that might come across as a wee bit conceited but it's not intended to be so.)

Thanks lads. Yeah, geegeez came up when i did a bit of research but they charge too much. I don't need lots of tools so I'm not paying £15 a week for pace maps.

Imo, pace is one of the most useful and hardest things to predict in racing and pundits get it wrong regularly.
I use the ATR predictor as a guide, but remain aware that it's all change for fields and circumstances.
Not naive enough to be conceited about it though.:)

eg. Pace predictor for2.50G tomorrow says EVEN for a 5f downhill sprint which, with so many vying for position, is plainly ludicrous.
I have my own thoughts, but I'll save them waiting for BOG.

Yeah I'm just gonna continue with the ATR one. I've had a bad twelve months on the horses and I was just looking for ways to tweak my approach but it's all bollocks, my approach is fine, it's solid - it's the execution bit I'm getting wrong.

The execution? How so?

Fecking about too much with multis. I liked Hukum and Emily Upjohn on Saturday and I don't like dutching singles so I normally pick the bigger priced one for a single and the smaller one I'll stick in some sort of multi. I'd rather do that than not have enough on two horses (this goes back to the Cotswold Chase when I wanted to take Thistlecrack on and decided to split stake on Smad Place and Many Clouds so whilst I was happy with a winner I was less than chuffed with the winnings.)

I ended up though putting both Emily and Hukum in doubles and I chose Peruse for the Hukum bet and the frigger hasn't been declared for Wednesday's race. Too much faffing about this season - I like multis and they have their place but solid sort of 6/1 chances that years ago would have been nice winners I'm dicking about with too much.

That chimes with me, Euro. I'm not a great fan of multis, although I have a dabble now and then with fun bets. Never, ever, with the serious bets and if I’m going to double up I prefer it to be on the one horse when I’m happy to add if the stars get in alignment.

I go through wee phases of dabbling in multis/accies but they seldom come off and that puts me off for ages.

Singles are much the best way to go but when a multi does come off...

My last proper big one was 2011, just as I was retiring. Two Godolphins in Saturday handicaps. Both stotted in at 20/1. Maybe deep down that's why I'm so fond of Godolphins in handicaps but if I live to 100 the bookies will never get that money back :)

Speaking of that now Peruse likely goes for the 10f option on Thursday Tagabawa interests me for that Wednesday race over 12. Top weight, stepped back up in trip.

ATR's pace map is suggesting most of the pace will be high in the 5f sprint, I've bet Navello (stall 1), we'll see.
