Wednesday, 9 January 2008: There was a time when Palace Music was one of the most popular imported stallions at stud in Australia.
The attractive chestnut with the distinctive white markings made a considerable impact during the 1990s when his notable progeny included Group One stars Naturalism, Ready To Explode and Anthems.
Palace Music died early this week in Victoria where he had been in retirement since 2006 but his influence will live on as a a popular broodmare sire.
A son of the English Derby winner The Minstrel, Palace Music was bred in Kentucky from the Prince John mare Come My Prince.
He became a top class international performer, winning the G1 Newmarket Champion Stakes and G1 John Henry Handicap at Hollywood Park, retiring with seven wins from 21 starts.
He began his stud career in 1987 in Kentucky and sired 31 stakeswinners – including six G1 winners in both hemispheres among 437 individual winners.
Palace Music is perhaps best known as the sire of US champion Cigar, who won 16 consecutive races and made him leading sire in North America by earnings in 1995.
Palace Music began his shuttle career in 1991 and stood in both New Zealand and Australia.
He remained a permanent resident in Australia from the early 1990s, standing at Segenhoe Stud in NSW and later at Rangal Park Stud in Victoria.
His broodmare influence is stroing as his daughters have produced 39 stakeswinners, including Railings, Sound Action, Falkirk, Able Prince and Insouciant.
