From October, it will cost £66 for a passport. That is absurd and unjustifiable just for "security costs."

Typical of this Big brother government .

In fact in two ways - one it is sometimes like 1984 - two they couldn't be doing a worse job if they replaced John Prescott with Jade , John Reid with Nikki and Tony Blair with Brian Dowling

Never mind the cost - all applicants, including those who are simply renewing a passport, will have to be interviewed in person by 2009. The Passport Agency is to open 65 new offices to cope with this. F*cking ridiculous!

I will still buy one as I refuse to spend more time in this country than necessary. The Givernment must surely know that millions go abroad each year and with English summers often being pants, for any decent sunshine, overseas is the only option. We are hamstrung and they know this.

I think I might apply to become Irish - I have an Irish great grandmother , if I had been good enough that would have got me in their football team . ;)

That'll be why they feel the need for a 30% rise in cost then.

Lucky I renewed mine earlier this year then.

Spooky. A friend telephoned me last night asking if I would go and co-sign her 17yo daughter's passport photo/form - they had forgotten (as did we several years ago re Giles) that a child's passport only lasts for 5 years, not ten, and so were in a panic to get it fast-tracked - which is some £90+ ....

The current rates to apply for an Irish passport are:

Standard 10 year (34-page passport): €75
Large 10 year (66-page) passport: €100

Mine runs out in August and we're off on holiday in October so I'll get mine in the next few weeks for the £51 it is now. Georgia needs one and I think that's £46. I'm not looking forward to the rigmarole of getting a photo of her for it. Do you know how tricky it is to stand in a photo booth, head and arms covered in a white sheet as you try to hold a baby in the correct position AND get it to look directly forward at the same time, not too close, not too far away and with no parental body parts showing? The years have been kind and I look fairly similar to my old passport photo, but by this time next year Georgia will be unrecognisable from her photo yet she'll have this passport until she's five

Mine still has 5 years to run but I think I will, Brian.

Maybe the Passport Office should look at introducing family passports.

I'm sure you can. In Ireland all you need to do is get a consent form signed by the father and witnessed by the police. I'm sure the procedure is standard within the EU.

Edit!

Wrong info there. I just checked it up and from October 2004 children have had to have their own passports in Ireland, for new applications.

No, all children need their own one now unless they were already on a parents passport in which case they can use that until it runs out. At great expense, all of my girls have their own passports. Last year was a nightmare because two of them needed a new passport and so did Mr GG. Cost us an arm and a leg! Childrens passports are valid for five years so it would be nice if they were half the price of an adults ten year one.

Ah right, seems a bit OTT in the way of charges. Particularly given the queues that often build up at passport offices, how about a £10 an hour reduction on ALL fees for the time you spend waiting on the phone or queueing at the office?

We could do with a few decent lawyers, but our football team isn't in that bad shape, surely?

Sadly , I understand it is grandparents down . I would have to come and live in the place to get Irish citizenship .

No , they were a green light to child abduction. That is why individual passports were introduced .
