Hasn't it been accepted for some time now that a reasonable proportion of public sector workers now enjoy a better pay and conditions package than their private sector counterparts?

I work in the care sector. Many council-run care services have been transferred over to the private sector and the cost of the public sector staff has been one of the motivators for this. I have sat in a number of meetings about different services where the local authorities have openly stated that they are "outsourcing" because they can buy services more cheaply from the private sector because of the pay and conditions differentials.

Depends which level of public sector jobs they are referring to. The comment about more expertise and specialisation within the ranks would be applicable certainly to the NHS.

What the papers haven't picked up on is that many NHS staff in various Trusts around the country have already been experiencing a pay freeze for the last 2 years, imposed by the Trusts who have overspent badly (on less important things than patients) and having to balance their books. We're set for another 2 years on top of that in line with the recent Government ruling.

I know that pharmacists working in NHS hospitals quite a bit less than those working in the private sector i.e. for Boots, Lloyds, Rowlands and the like unless they've worked their way up into one of the senior positions which are fairly few and far between.
