My laptop broke so I am borrowing one from my parents. I am trying to download AVG and a couple of other things and they are all downloaded extremely slowly - 18 hours apparently for the AVG file. Is there any way I can speed up downloads? My broadband connection is working fine.

Paul, google either Internet Download Accelerator ( IDA ), or Internet Download Manager ( IDM ). Either of these should boost the download speed enormously, and have trial periods before you have to purchase.

Isnt that the 4th laptop you have broken in the last 2 years, possibly stop using them as footrests/cricket bats!!!!!
..and stop pouring wine into/over them!!!

I have something - don't know what- stuck under my space bar so it does't depress properly and I don't know how to get the keys off. Pleasebeunderstandingifmypostsstarttolooklikethis.

My space bar has just given a rather satisfying crunch and is now fully operational again. I still don't know what was stuck though.

Put a knife under the space bar and apply a little pressure, it will then pop off and you can clean it. They go back on easily enough too. :D

Thanks for the suggestion, Dave but I can't download anything at all. I tried a system restore point but no good and my technical support were useless.

PEE try restore in SAFE MODE it may just work for you .....reboot p-c when it starts to load keep pressing F8 up and down until it shows in SAFE MODE.......then try this ...
To run System Restore in safe mode
1.
Access System Restore through Help and Support.

2.
Follow the instructions on your screen.

To access the System Restore Wizard, click Start, and then click Help and Support. Click Performance and Maintenance, click Using System Restore to undo changes, and then click Run the System Restore Wizard........

While the computer is in safe mode, System Restore does not create any restore points. Therefore, you cannot undo a restoration that you performed when the computer was in safe mode......

You can use System Restore to restore your computer to any restore point while in safe mode. If you cannot start the computer in standard mode, you can use System Restore to restore to a time when you could start the computer without errors......

To restore to a time when your computer started without errors, select a restore point as close to the time you remember it last started without errors......

But Merlin, I tried s system restore to a month ago and that had no effect. I am using my old laptop now and that is fine. According to the technical support people it is a spyware thing but I can't download spybot or anything else! Oh well.

Sometimes a spyware program is very obvious. It adds itself to your menu bar and be found listed in your Add/Remove Programs list in your Windows Control Panel. Click Start, click Settings) then Control Panel then Add/Remove Programs and look for a program that you don't recognize. Sometimes its obvious....like "XXX dialer" or something like that. Just use the Add/Remove Programs features to remove it. Sometimes its not as evident and you have to go diving into the registry and delete entries and also search for specific files on your hard drive and remove them. You can also remove spyware by turning the program off in you StartUp area.
