I have a minor PC problem that is getting very annoying and I hope someone here can help me.

The problem is that lately, I have severe problem obtaining access to certain websites such as Ladbrokes, hotmail, sportinglife, but Im fine on website such as here or the BBC. Is the problem lie with the bandwidth since Im sharing wireless with the rest of the house or do I have some type of virus on my PC. In addition, does anyone know any free anti virus or bugs programs that I can download to protect my PC.

Thanks in advance.

Will

Is it any secure site that you are having trouble with? i.e. ones with URLs starting https://. it sounds like your privacy settings might be too high.

What browser do you use? IE.x ? Have you tried a different one (like Firefox)

For free protection programmes I use:

AVG Anti Virus
ZoneAlarm FireWall
Ad-Aware spyware remover.

If you know your way around the router settings, make sure the MTU value is the same as that recommended by your ISP

I use a mac and was having a lot of problems using its designated browser Safari
I recently changed to Mozilla Firefox [free to download] and it's much better and faster, with lots of cute extras including telling you when your spelling is wrong :)

Safari has a built in spell-checker too; it's actually a system-wide spell checker that can be used by any program that wants to. You might have to turn it on in the preferences though; I'm not sure if it's there by default.

Did your Safari woes involve Betfair's site by any chance?

Yes, it was particularly with Betfair that I was having problems. They kindly emailed me to say they 'don't support' Safari and advised me to download Firefox, as their site is tailored for it. It doesn't keep quitting like Safari either, though it does freeze occasionally if I've put the laptop on sleep, but that's not a big problem. No regrets at all.

Yeah, pretty poor show from Betfair really. There'll be a lot more Safari users out there once the new iPod and iPhone are released so I expect to see that change.

You might like to try Camino, btw. It's basically the same engine as Firefox but with a proper Mac frontend. http://caminobrowser.org/

Thanks, not sure what a front end is in this context! - tho mine's even bigger than SL's :P
I was recommended a mac when my last pc laptop bit the dust [hinges went! so back/screen came off] but I don't like the mac system at all.

I switched to a Mac about a year ago, wouldn't go back to Windows for anything (still have to put up with it at work...).

The front end meaning the look-and-feel. The inner workings are essentially the same as Firefox, so when a site like Betfair says it works on Firefox, it also works on this.
