People paying by card at cash and card self-service tills in Tesco when there are only two such cash options

You see, I feel a custodial sentence isn't sufficient in these instances and, while opposed to capital punishment generally (miscarriages of justice, statistically doesn't actually impact murder rates anyway) I think the occasional in-store execution might act as a deterrent to those labouring under the gross and weird misapprehension their time might be equally precious to mine.

It's a subject that doesn't get enough global media attention, frankly.

I have serious objections to self-service checkouts.

I accept that some people like them but the only person that has ever said to me that they actually prefer them is a person I otherwise found to be socially inept, selfish and ill-mannered. He said he felt more in control going through the self-service checkout. This was from someone who had no control over his morals.

Supermarkets claim these SS - how appropriate - checkouts reduce costs and therefore benefit the customer. I challenge anyone to name one item that has come down in price since they were installed.

They also cost the community jobs. I reckon there must be four or five fewer staff in my local Aldi now compared to before the installation of these monstrosities.

And the machines shout at you for no good reason.

And if you're buying an alcoholic drink or twenty you still need to wait for a staff member to come and OK the transaction.

Same if an item you buy has a price reduction sticker on it.

I'd take a machine gun to these machines and to the people who decided to install them in the shops.

I've more or less got into the habit of making a point of going into Aldi to buy one thing instead of several and take it through the SS checkout just to make my own little point, hoping somebody somewhere is watching on CCTV.

This person sounds a lot like me! 😂

Self service check outs invariably have several staff hovering around them to help technophobes and, although no technophobe myself, I often invent a reason to ask for help to help keep them in a job.

I'll be in the minority, though, as most Tory shoppers I'd imagine would happily see no staff and lower prices.

But prices aren't lower and Aldi certainly doesn't have several staff around. There's usually just one.

It's just extra profit for the supermarket.

I did recently read somewhere that some supermarkets are starting to go back to real checkouts due to a significant increase in shoplifting on top of very negative customer feedback.

I've seriously thought about doing some shoplifting myself just to see how far I can get. I'm a weel kent face in Aldi who has many times expressed a fear of using these checkouts (one very kindly assistant always makes a point of putting my shopping through for me) so I reckon it would be quite easy for me to bluff my way through as a doddering old soul who made an honest mistake.

And for many elderly people a wee chat at the checkout, while it can be frustrating for those behind them in the queue, might be their only human contact of a lonely day.

I’ve never used one. Being a technophobe my current problem is paying for car parking. My son has downloaded some parking apps onto my phone ( which I rarely use anyway) but I’m still scared to go anywhere where I can’t pay by cash or card. Our nearest car park is now fully automated meaning that’s one less job for someone to do.

I don’t mind the self-service tills, but I find there’s a difference between the functionality of the best - M&S and Waitrose - and the more shite versions. Sainsbury’s cannot cope with loose veg, but everything else is fine.

I’m not for shopping in Aldi or Lidl, as that has never ended well in the past.

I'm rather hoping I haven't had a discussion with DO about self service tills in the past! I prefer them to manned tills as I can pack my bags in a more orderly fashion (I always feel under pressure to get it done as quickly as possible at a manned till) and I don't have to engage in meaningless small talk.

:ROFLMAO:

We haven't met, simmo, so it isn't you. It was someone I used to work with.

I also prefer to back my bags myself, one of the reasons I lke the likes of Aldi & Lidl. I'm happy to get my stuff through the checkout fast nad back into the trolley and then I can take my time organising the packing logically and 'space-efficiently', if I may coin a new phrase.
