Percussionist returns today. Has the likes of Reefscape and Lord Du Sud to beat, but could well be up to it. He will stay the extended trip.

Interesting Lord Du Sud is going for this instead of the Arc. Was bitterly disappointed not just that Percussionist was beat last time, but the very manner of it. He took an age to get past the very moderate pace setter and was brushed aside by the Godolphin horse. Plenty to prove but he should relish the trip.

Percussionist only third behind the two I thought he had to beat and first off the bridle. Couldn't believe the industry sp of 13/2 on Reefscape so had a saver on him.

I also believed Reefscape would have run a big one in the St Leger. Held off backing him as I thought it was likely he wouldn't take part.

As it was the result could have been so much better than it turned out as I backed Tycoon at 12/1 (each-way) and 7/1 to win and Quiff at 25/1 each-way.

Percussionist wins American Grand National (really a hurdle race)

Report: USA, Saturday
Far Hills, New Jersey: American Grand National (Grade 1 hurdle) 2m5f, turf, 4yo+

THE former Howard Johnson-trained Percussionist(Hanne Bechmann/James O'Farrell) landed a significant blow across the Atlantic on Saturday when he won the American Grand National.

Now based in Denmark, the nine-year-old won going away in the $250,000 event, formerly known as the Breeders' Cup Chase and the richest jumps race in the States, to take the prize to Europe for the second year in a row after the surprise victory of Irish-trained Your Sum Man in 2009.
Fourth in the Derby for John Gosden in 2004, Percussionist was purchased for 340,000gns by Graham Wylie and sent to Johnson, for whom he landed a three-lengthdefeat of Sergeant Cecil in the 2006 Yorkshire Cup.
Johnson's conditional jockey James O'Farrell, who rode him to win the Norwegian Champion Hurdle last month, retained the ride at Far Hills on Saturday, where the highlight of the US jumps season was a card comprising six races carrying a total of $500,000 in prize-money.
In front of a crowd of about 40,000 in rural New Jersey, Percussionist launched a withering move after the last to score going away for a decisive victory over domestic hopes Slip Away and Lead Us Not.
Percussionist is now owned by software executive Morten Busktop and Old Friends Stable.
Although the son of Sadler's Wells runs in the name of trainer Hanne Bechmann, Busktop and his wife care for Percussionist at their small yard outside Copenhagen. They saddled General Ledger to chase home Your Sum Man in the previous year's race.
When National Steeplechase Association starter R. Barry Watson dropped the flag to send the field on its way, Polaris Stable's Preemptive Strike and jockey Jody Petty attempted a preemptive strike on the lead. They opened a solid advantage for the first circuit of the Far Hills course, with Slip Away and jockey Paddy Young tracking them in second and an eager Class Bopper third.
Although the American Grand National is a historic race in its own right dating back to 1899, in its present incarnation it is an extension of the former Breeders' Cup Chase, won twice in 1990 and 1991 by Champion Hurdle winner Morley Street.
In more recent seasons, the race has been dominated by five-time winner McDynamo, who won every year from 2003-07.
Despite its title, however, the American Grand National resembles a hurdle in European terms.
The final major jump race of the US jump season, the Colonial Cup, will be held November 13 at the Springdale course in Camden, South Carolina.

Great to see the old boy still doing the business! Good old Cush, he's a character alright. I won a lot of money on him on his chasing debut, I'd been waiting for it for a long time.

Fantastic - well-written article, too, full of information. Which brings up the question as to why we don't get any US jumps racing on ATR? Endless sand 'n' slop, a few trotters/pacers, but nothing over obstacles. Surely something that should be redressed? I'd love to see how they do things over there. Shadz - any idea? Same sort of boring jumps we have, or any innovations?

Really glad to hear he won. One of my favourites and I'd been wondering what had happened to him.

Strictly limited wagering opportunities is the answer to why they don't show it on ATR Kri.

Most of the US Chase scene is based in and around Maryland (with the exception of the big Grade 1 chases run at the likes of Saratoga) and as such aren't given great coverage by the racing channels over there (HRTV and TGV).

On the positive side the National Steeplechase Association (http://www.nationalsteeplechase.com/) stream live to their website :)

Thanks for all of that, Stamparino! I'll add the site to Favourites and hope to see their jumps racing, so I can judge for myself. I don't understand why the wagering's so high on US flat racing, then - I'd have thought it quite short on odds given that the average race seems to comprise of 4.5 runners!

Percussionist runs today in the Colonial Cup in South Carolina.

Didn't realise Brian Crowley was over there nowadays (I assuming it's the same Crowley who used to ride for Veneita a few years back).
Presumably that's Willie Dowling who was with Len Lungo over here as well.

Slip Away won the race by 25 lengths,Percussionist out of the frame.
