Vic Reeves and a young girl whose name I don't know, but I think used to be on Blue Peter, are co-presenting this programme tonight on Ch.5. To see it is to be transported back in time into the awestruck 1950s style of television. I'd say 'aw, sweet', except that Reeves is in a permanent state of excitement about lumps of clunky lead - 'no concretions on that!' = 'No. Lead is poisonous and so nothing lives on it' and repeats the last few words the Cape Cod divers tell him about what they expect to find. "Thar's gold dust on thur." Reeves: "Gold dust on there?" "Yup. Just a few li'l bits just thur." Reeves: "Just there? Oh, what will they be, then?" :what:

The girl has now said 'Wow... ' about 17 times, without any inflection of amazement or co-excitement (although at one point, when asked by Our Vic if she felt excited, since he did, she claimed to always feel as excited as he ever did. I felt that went just a little too far in anything I needed to know).

Oh, got to go. Vic's excited about some ropes now, and I'm sure Miss Wow will have another unastounded exclamation for us in due course...

And to think that this is about pirate Black Sam Bellamy (the real one, sound in wind and limb) and the WHYDAH - pronounced Widder - the huge cargo ship he hounded, captured, and sailed to his and his crew's death in a huge Cape storm. One could weep at the mediocrity of the presentation, if one wasn't slightly catatonic already.
