... the title's a joke, of course.

An easy bet if, for £1, you're satisfied with a £7-70p return.
However, if you want a better result, it seems a hard bet.

Basically, the more lower-priced horses make the frame, the less the return.
So, you need to make a choice: pick low (priced) and win a low return or pick high for a high return ... and all places in between.

I'm finding it a bit of a conundrum.

Anyone else have any success with this bet?

I only play it when it looks like it could pay well.

14 runner races through the card on Saturday afternoons at Newmarket, Doncaster, Ascot etc. are the best I find. Obviously during the flat season.

Obviously. :)

At least on the flat, we see very few 4 horse races (where you have to pick the winner for a placepot), unlike NH.

Most of my friends are obsessed with placepots including one who is a real specialist. His basic philosophy would be to play as late as possible to take advantage of the latest information and not to be afraid to include all the runners in 3 & 4 runner races.

I love placepots and find the big meetings are the best ones for them. I love tackling the Cheltenham placepots each year and pulling them off can be very rewarding.

A totally non-racing friend of mine astounded everyone at a party I hosted at Brighton last year, picking the Chinese lucky number 8, or 2 and 4 if there weren't 8 runners ( 2 x 4 = 8, see), ASTROLIBRA as she's into horoscopes (Mystic Meg), and so on. Carted off just under a grand by employing no more wisdom than that. I think she spent about a tenner. The form bandits in the group went home in a terrible sulk.

Well done her!
If you're hoping for a big pay-out, there have to be a few turn-overs ... which is what makes it so hard!
but, as Flame said, not without the enjoyment of trying to work it out.

I'm newly interested because of a completely fluke win at Ascot (jumps) for £1 - paid £359, and surprised me that it paid so well.

Oooooh! Yummy! What a beauty! Yes, sadly, there are some very tiny pay-outs which are truly dispiriting - I keep being reminded it's 'what's in the pot' at the time, whatever that means. But it does seem that enough chunky returns come in, too, and not all based on a Ph.D in Dosage Theory! (Although, before he sees this and squeals at me, Mr. Miller's apartment in Rome, London flat in Dorchester Square, and holiday home in Barbados is solely down to such expertise.)
