HEATHEN
Prior to his first race at Newbury Class 4 maiden over 1m on 16/4 (when he was ridden significantly by Buick) Ed Dunlop said:*He’s by Lope De Vega out of Great Heavens. He works nicely and obviously he’s an unknown quantity at this stage but he's unraced and we like him.
In the race*Buick had him bang in the right place as they got to the sharp end and put him under no pressure at all when he got swamped. He finished 9/17. Super educational ride by Buick and nothing more expected at 16/1.
Next up 25/4 1m1f Class 5 novice on the all weather at Southwell ridden by Callum Shepherd. “In*rear, shaken up and headway on outer from 3f out, ridden briefly 1f out, never dangerous, promising (op 11/1) Heathen has a fine middle-distance pedigree and this was encouraging, out the back early but making up some good ground without being knocked about. He's one to keep onside as his stamina is more fully tested.” RPost. Handicap qualifier I reckon - came 5th/12 and not pressured, again 25/1 and nothing more expected.
Third qualifying run 3/5 1m Class 5 novice again on the AW at Lingfield ridden by*Rhys Clutterbuck. “looks ready for a step up in distance and will be of obvious appeal, given his great pedigree, once moved into handicaps.”RPost. 7th/11 never featured and nothing more expected at 66/1. Slightly worried that he sweated up beforehand (first time) and was a tad hard to get settled.
If his first handicap is up in trip with Buick back on board (or a top jock if staying on AW) then that’s when he’ll be trying. If not up in trip then I suspect they will think his handicap mark is not sufficiently favourable and look for another mid division run to get some off.
