No Googling. In all cases I am looking for the band/artist who had the biggest UK hit with the song named.

1) Tobacco Road
2) Forget Him
3) Michelle
4) Spooky
5) African Waltz
6) You've Lost That Lovin Feeling (bonus if you can tell me what was at no.2 at the same time)
7) Tell Him
8) If You Gotta Go, Go Now
9) A Walk In The Black Forest
10) Shapes Of Things

Although I'm sure that I don't qualify as a member of the target audience for this quiz, I'm surprised that not only do I know the names of many of the artistes but that I can also sing the numbers too....

1) Tobacco Road - The Animals
2) Forget Him - Boby Rydell
3) Michelle - The Four Tops (Not the Beatles song)
4) Spooky
5) African Waltz - Cannonball Adderley
6) You've Lost That Lovin Feeling (bonus if you can tell me what was at no.2 at the same time) - The Righteous Brothers
7) Tell Him - The Exciters
8) If You Gotta Go, Go Now - Bob Dylan (though someone else may have had the biggest hit with it)
9) A Walk In The Black Forest - Horst Jankowski
(10) Shapes Of Things - David Bowie

Simmo, I have just checked my records and New Order were def the group with the highest position in the charts with the song of that title.

I knew that would happen - I think it's a different song. This was a number 4 hit in 1969 (or thereabouts).

Brian, No's 1,3,5,7,8 and 10 from your answers..... are not the answers I was looking for.

Yes, I thought might struggle with the top UK versions as I will have listed the best performances. It's a bit like Cilla Black in the '60s covering those Bacharach songs performed so much better by Dionne Warwick and - the horror, the horror - Lulu's version of Shout! by the Isley Brothers.

Is it the, gulp, Alma Cogan version of Tell Him that you're looking for?

No, it is not the Alma Cogan version. Nor is it that seventies version by some glam rock band.

Right, I'm off to the boozer now - here's the answers - LOOK AWAY IF YOU DON'T WANT TO KNOW YET.

1) Nashville Teens
2) Bobby Rydell
3) Overlanders
4) Classics IV
5) Johnny Dankworth
6) Righteous Brothers
7) Billie
8) Manfred Mann
9) Horst Jankowski
10) Yardbirds

Oh yes, I feel pretty oh so pretty and really, really young (although that could be stupid as well) got no 6 and thats it, unfortunately I should know them all.

Got them all. Answer to No 7 is actually Billie Davis (female)

No2 in the chart when Righteous Bros were top with "You've Lost That Lovin Feeling" was I suspect Cilla Black with the same song.
