Prix Edmond Blanc G3
Saint-Cloud 1m
THERE were red faces at Saint-Cloud yesterday when the racecourse announcer called the wrong winner of the 1m Prix Edmond Blanc, writes Desmond Stoneham.
Initially, owner Jean-Claude Seroul was being congratulated in the winner's enclosure as Gris De Gris was thought to have been first past the post in the Group 3 race.
But it became clear the announcer had jumped the gun when cheers from the supporters of the German challenger Konig Turf filled the air as he was confirmed the winner by a nose after a photo.
The mix-up was almost as desperate as the battle to the line which the visitor from Hanover won on the nod in the hands of Stephane Pasquier.
Pasquier had decided to take control running into the final turn on Konig Turf, who was joined at the head of affairs by Gris De Gris entering the final furlong.
They had the race to themselves from then on and the favourite, Spirito Del Vento, never looked like getting on terms, being pushed along from some way out.
Konig Turf was taking his fourth Group event, and in the winner's enclosure his trainer, Christian Sprengel, said: "We came here for the soft ground and there's no prize-money left in Germany.
"Konig Turf has two screws in a leg and needs a true pace to show his best. He is a real fighter and we will be back in a few weeks' time for the Prix du Muguet. Thanks to him, I've now won my first Group race in France."
Pasquier said: "He was very courageous and loved the ground. We were lucky as he had his nose in front at exactly the right time."
Seroul must have had mixed emotions after the confusion. He said: "Whether we won or not Gris De Gris ran a brave race and is a very tough individual. He will now have a rest of five or six weeks."
The connections of Spirito Del Vento were not pleased after the race. Owner Luigi Ciampi's racing manager Paul Nataf said: "We were a little disappointed with the run, but it will have done him good. He needed the race.
"His programme won't be changed, so it's now the Prix du Muguet followed by the Prix d'Ispahan and the Queen Anne Stakes at Ascot."
