So Clive, what do you think of this article, and what Harman says in it?

http://uk.news.yahoo.com/harman-labour-gambling-move-wrong-125135420.html

I just wanted to ask you, based on what you've previously said about this on forums such as this about the issue, is she wrong to say whats she now saying?

Or do you agree with what she's saying and says she took part in in government i.e. the liberalisation of gambling?

This is such a pertinent issue at the moment isn't it.

I was watching newsnight a few months ago and a Daily Mail columnist asked Tessa Jowell why Labour fell in love with gambling. In Jowellesque fashion she replied "we didn't fall in love with gambling, we made it safer."

To which I sat back and thought, 'what fecking planet is she on'.

Should address this everyone marble...

I have mixed feelings about this and not sure what the answer is exactly, but one thing they do miss (or dare not mention) is that it isnt simply poor areas that are targeted

I was in Banglatown last week and there isnt a bookies anywhere and yet thats just about the poorest area in london. But cycling through Deptford a week before and yes, the high street was stuffed with them. Deptford is a big afro carribean area of course

But overall and even though I think Harman is generally an idiot, not unsympathetic to the view

The Coalition backs the current status quo by the sounds of it.

They argue for a big society exercising social responsibility (not a totally bad idea imo), but allow more and more bookies to open on the highstreet offering 'financial services', proven by Dispatches to fleece people from poorer areas. So that big society message really is flawed isn't it, or half hearted.

It is a hypocritical approach if they ever even considered it might be. I've felt strongly about this issue myself for a few years and I have nothing to hide in terms of my bias.

David Lami is absolutely right, and Harmen is too. LOL when it hits the black community people will listen:)

Ps, of course everyone is welcome to comment on this thread.

And they've basterdised betting on the horses and dogs with the use of these machines. They bastardised betting. That wise forumite Drone on the other place has been saying something along this for years, and he is absolutely spot on. Its a shame he doesn't come on here.
