It's a pity to hear that the RACE training course for young jockeys has been cancelled for this year with the course under review. Apparently, funding of €350k is not available from FAS (for those in the UK, that's the job training centre who run courses for those seeking to upskill while unemployed). A number of issues were raised by a minority of last years students. It's a fierce pity as many of the top Irish flat and jumps jocks came through RACE.

Disappointing stuff Oran - there was a good documentary about the teens who attend RACE shown on one of the Irish channels and repeated on RUK over Christmas a couple of years ago.

Hope they can find the funding for 2011.

Now, that would be a damn good use of some bookmakers' profits! Talk about securing the love and affection of youngsters if they were to get together and fund that. If they're not interested in helping out owners with better prize money, then what finer way to show they really believe in supporting the product they use by funding the riders of tomorrow.

There are enough people on this forum working for bookies and exchanges - why not put this forward as one helluva good PR exercise, which, if shared around a bit, would be teeth-picking money?

It is a bit disappointing that some of the major players in the sport (including some of the super wealthy jockeys who once used the facility) could not some how help out in this instance as a one off.

Do they even pay tax under the exemption? So you'd think they'd have the cash! Or maybe even some of the trainers would think about providing funding too. But I guess it's a fair wedge to gather in a short period of time.
